So all the nikon dslr's i've own all have published sync speeds of 1/250s, BUT, if you shoot with a pocket wizard or the like, you can push it to 1/320s with no shadow at all, or 1/400s with a half shadow...the d600 is published 1/200s, but can you push it to 1/250s with no shadow from the shutter curtain?

2nd question...on DX cameras, when you do get a shadow, it shows at the bottom...on FX, it shows at the top...does the D600 follow this pattern as well??

I sure hope Nikon releases a firmware update for the D600's to make the sync 1/250

So I have been looking online on this same subject and have found a couple of folks having the same issue I have.

D600, Alienbees and Phottix Strato II's, can't get pass 1/160 without shadows showing up, its not even living up to the 1/200's for me.

Anyone else running into this?

I haven't yet used my Stratos setup with my ABs but wireless trigger lag leading to lower max shutter speed is not that uncommon from what I understand.

I've had that with my Photogenics Power Lights but haven't tried with my Elinchroms yet. If I remember correctly the shadow was at the bottom. I could get too 1/250 when I had my D700 but it really hasn't been an issue for studio style shooting.

I'm wondering with time it may loosen up and get me closer to 1/250.

That's right my shadows at 1/200 are at the bottom as well forcing me to drop to 1/160th.

My D700 did 1/250th with no problem.

I can get 1/320 all day with my D700. i use cyber syncs if that helps any. Thats one of the major reasons I won't make the switch. You can always get a D40 for like 120$. it goes 1/500 . Easy money if you ask me. Great little tool.

That and a D70 too.

However if you want explore the dynamic range limits of what a D600 can provide then forget about the older cams.

The problem isn't the DR its the sync speed. Motion blur. I came from a canon 5d2 simply because I was borring my brothers D700 and the fact that I could shoot skateboarding at 320 w a Qflash and have NO curtain. DR to behonest is not that big of an issue for me. Most he modern cameras do a decent enough job, even the D40 is fine. Don't get me wrong it's not great but

Agreed, I may have to jump back to a D700 again, it was working great for me (curiosity killed the cat :-). I just wish it had at least 16/24MP. D800 is too much.

Probably a dumb question but are the trigger batteries fresh? I lose sync speed with my cactus v4 junk if the batteries get a little old.

FWIW - I have had no problem shooting 1/200th using the Pocket Wizard III's.

Yes, I did put a fresh set on before the shoot. Maybe something wrong with those? I'll go ahead and try my rechargeable's.

Thanks for the feedback.

So I tested with 3 different sets of batteries, 2 were regular and 1 eneloops.

Same results.

I posted 3 pics with different shutter settings to show what I see, now with a set of fresh rechargeable batteries it did get a bit better but at 1/200 you still can see a shadow starting to form at the bottom, 1/250th is unusable with the D600 and this set of triggers.... unless you use CLS and all Nikon flashes of course.
