p.1 #1 · New Years' Camera/Lens Wishes & Predictions?

What are your Canon equipment wishes for 2013?

Here are some of my wishes and predictions.

-The recently rumored EF 24-70 2.8L IS is certainly something to be excited about.
-In the spirit of the newly-revised 24, 28, and 35mm primes, I would like to see the 50mm and 85mm finally get updated as well.
-I would especially like to see a EF 85 1.8 IS priced at $799 or lower.
-Although I am not in the market for one, I think 2013 will finally be the year that Canon releases a 14-24 2.8L lens worthy of competing with the Nikon offering. Expect the price to top $2500-$3000.
-I hope the 7DII debuts with a completely new sensor, foreshadowing new FF sensor tech from Canon. I hope Canon will start using a new state-of-the-art 0.2 μm copper sensor manufacturing process which will allow them to switch from off-chip analog to digital converters to on-chip per-column ADCs (like Sony/Nikon).
-I would love to see a 5DIV in early 2014 with a 24-26 MPX FF version of this new sensor; perhaps at about the same time, Canon will release a 4D with a 40-45 MPX version of this same chip.
-Any sensor Canon releases from here on out without the on-chip per column ADCs (and therefore unable to compete with Sony/Nikon on the DxOMark ratings list) will be a wasted effort by Canon.

-BUT if Nikon either admits to and fixes their D600 "dust" issue and/or releases a D750 (D600 sensor in a D800 body with 8 fps) for $2500 then I would reconsider once again a jump to Nikon.
-I also predict Nikon will release a 24-70 2.8G VR before Canon does, making the switch to Nikon that much more tempting. (The D750 + 24-70 2.8G VR would be THE ULTIMATE kit.)
-In line with their recent spree of prime releases, I also expect Nikon to release a 135 2.0G in 2013. It will debut without VR for around $899.

this would be awesome ....

Sigma 500mm F5.6

Canon 400mm F5.6 is great. But all of Canon's super-teles are priced beyond consideration (400mm+).

Wishes and predictions might be quite different here. My wish is a camera better than the D800 specs, but I meanwhile tend to think that Canon might first put this technology into a new future 1D camera series with a very high price tag (ignoring the competition). In this case.....not even wishes.

According to Canon hype the 5D3 already exceeds the D800 in everything but pixel count.
According to DXO it falls far short.

I personally hope that Canon does come out with a far better camera.
Nikon needs the competition.

I wish for continued self-control and, no matter how great (or poor) the new model(s) is/are, I won't buy it. Instead, I'll just keep shooting with the cameras and lenses of the ancient ones.

Fantasy - A fully mind controlled digital system that flies or hovers so that my wheels/physical issues will no longer limit my access; with 8mm fisheye to 1200mm supertele selectable FLs with apretures from f1.0 - f64, shutter speeds of bulb to 1/100000, Exmor type 100MP sensor with no noise, unlimited DR and ISO...there's more I'm still thinkin on it...oh ya, AF down to f16 and 24 FPS, RAW/JPEG buffer unlimited.

Reality - Before spring, 6D 24-105 or 24-70 f4L IS combo kit, perhaps 35 f2 IS, 400 f5.6L and 1.4x T/C III later in the year or 2014.

Hopes - peace on earth and a 400 or 500 f5.6 IS, replace my aging 40D with a 7D or the updated 7D. And a high res body 1D or 5D style for those that need it...

Happy Holidays to All

Three wishes:

1) 7dii with iso ability and tracking as good as 5diii

2) 5div with 40mpx and dynamic range to match or exceed d800

3) 200-400 is actually for sale.

Oh yeah and world peace, if santa has anything left after straightening out Canon.

For 2013 I'm hoping to see:

- a 7D2 as a viable 1D4 replacement (high pixel density, high FPS, minimum 5D3 type AF)
Raise the price into the $3000 range just make it worth it.

- 100-400 with 4 stop IS, twist zoom, and better IQ

- 24-70 2.8 IS hopefully announced early because I'll wait for it

- 120-300 2.8 Sigma has rock solid AF

35 f/1.4L Mark II
135 f/1.8L IS or non IS
24-70 f/2.8L IS
14-35 f/2.8L (14-24 is just too wide)
5D3 for under $2500 (what it should be) and a firmware fix for numerous things
6D2 with joystick, duel slots,
3D with monster megapixels and dynamic range
16 bit color with Sony style sensor engineering on all bodies
No more Canon marketing games
No more Canon radically crippled bodies (just a little, please)
Stop moving buttons around on new bodies so people want to buy 2 instead of 1. Just standardize the damn button placement already.
And a partridge in a pear tree ;-)

I think no one has told Reuters about Nikon or DXO or about how inadequate Canon gear is. Maybe Nikon journos spend more time reading DXO.
I look forward to a 7D upgrade in 2013.
My 5DIII will see its days out in my possession along with the 1DIII. Now in virtual retirement I cannot bring myself to pay for a 1 series & will spend more time visiting my son & family in Europe during 2013 & beyond. Hopefully next Christmas with his wife's family

If the 7D2 has the feature set to replace the 1D4 I really don't think the $3000 range is a bad deal. As far as MP goes I'm actually hoping for the reverse as I already have the 1DX for low light events. 7D2 at 1.6x crop 18-24MP would offer nice reach for outdoor field sports.
