Hi everyone happy holidays. I have a dilema. I need to know from those out there that have or had the tamron 17-50 f2.8 non vs, how good was it compared to there canon lenes be it 18-55 or anyother kit lenes that they purchased with their camera. I have a chance to get a used one at a fair price. But I doubt the owner would let test drive it. Thank you in advance.

by the way I have a canon 50d with 28-135 f3.5-5.6. I also have ef 50mm 1.8 II and this a great little lenes. but not very sharp at 1.8. I think it gets sharper at about f2.8.

The Tamron is great! It lets in 4x the light of the kit lens at 50mm. The kit lens is great outside or in great light.

The non-VC Tamron 17-50 is about the best bang for buck standard crop zoom I know of.

It's as good as a 17-55IS (but with out the IS and 5mm) for a fraction of the price. The Tamrons also have an excellent warranty.

Stellar lens for the price. I used it early on in my days before I could afford L glass and it was great.

Another +1 for the tamron (non vc), it's a great little lens... it's light, 2.8 through the whole zoom range, sharp (sharper than the vc) and cheap.

I rarely use mine now but when I'm going to go out shooting after work I'll always pack it and it's saved me a few times!!

Mine has been my go-to lens on my 40D for almost four years now. Sad that I'm going to have to sell it when I move to FF in a few months. It is my 2nd most consistently sharp and in-focus lens - beaten only by a narrow margin by the 70-200 f/4L. Over the years have considered upgrading to the Canon 17-55, but only to get IS and the faster USM focusing - the Tamron is plenty sharp even wide open.

I have a different experience with the Tam 17-50mm.
I recently picked one up from a FM member, but found it to be quite soft on my 7D compared to my 17-55 is. I was disappointed, because I wanted a smaller, lighter package for ski touring. It weighs 7 oz. less than the 17-55 and is smaller too.

I invested in FoCal (now runs on a Mac!), printed targets on mat paper, lit the target properly and did a round of MA testing. The Tamron came back needing a +20 MA adjustment! I've since done some real world, tripod mounted shots with the 17-55 and 17-50 and they are much closer now. I felt the +20 looked slightly back focused, so did some seat of the pants +10, +15 and +20 MA comparisons, and went with +15.
I'm still deciding if I want to keep the lens.

I was convinced to buy the Tamron because of similar reviews as the other posters here. Anyone else have less than stellar results with this lens? Am I missing something?
