p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Alright - which lens to get? 40mm f/2.8 or 35mm f/2

My baby is getting fussy as I type so going to make this quick...I apologize...

I own a Rebel T2i. Got it with the kit lens. I also purchased a 50mm f/1.8 because I had one in the past and loved it. Still do! It is my go to lens..actually it's pretty much my only lens that is ever on the camera. I've rarely used the kit lens.

I want a wide angle lens now as I'm finding it frustrating at times taking pictures of my daughter (or other things in general) if I can't get far away enough from her to get her in the shot like I'd like. I have a $300 budget MAX and really would like to go cheaper. Currently looking at the 40mm pancake lens, or the 35mm f/2 wide angle lens. Would you say there is a discernible difference between those two that would make one better than the other? Any experiences? I understand my kit zoom lens can be wide angle up to 18mm, but I have never been that impressed with its image quality indoors and it also doesn't let a lot of light in with f/3.5.

Any opinions, picture examples, anything you can throw at me would be great!! I'm hoping to purchase something by tomorrow (ordering through Amazon) so I can have a new lens for Christmas...that is if I decide to actually get a new lens after all.

Thank you!

The 35 will do more for you to differentiate itself from the kit lens and your 50. That is what I would go for.

I've had them both. They are both good. The 35 is probably a bit more useful. I'd think about a Tamron 17-50 before either though.

For about $325 used, for a crop body, I think the Tamron 17-50/2.8 is the best deal out there. At least it was the last time I looked around in the crop lens market. I've recommended this lens to several friends and they're all very happy with it. It's fast, good color, etc.

Easy, 35 2.0. You want to shoot without a flash indoors? 2.8 is just not fast. I had the 40 since it came out and finally got rid of it since I actually used it for zero shots.

Of course the other option, and maybe the best one, is to buy a flash and learn how to use it...

40mm F2.8 pancake with Canon lens hood

the 35mm F2 was not a bad lens but had weak resolution F2-F2.8
the 40mm F2.8 is excellent for sharpness at F2.8.
40mm F2.8 has better bokeh

they both have vignetting at F2.8

40mm is not much wider than a 50, especially on a crop body. If I were you I'd look more to a 28-30mm or maybe even a 24mm. The Canon 28mm 1.8 is going to be a little more money but a more useful FL I think and a very good lens, or you could try the Sigma 30mm 1.4. You could also try Canons older 28mm 2.8 or the 24mm 2.8 too.

I'd go 35 f/2. And if you're looking for a bit wider, the 28 f/1.8 isn't a slouch on a crop camera either!!!

I have both, while I want to like the 40mm it is the 35mm that does it for me. On a 5D or 6D 35mm is my favorite focal length, and the f2.0 helps. I haven't checked the sharpness, it's fine for me. The 40mm does take nice photos and it is rather quiet, and I love the size and weight. But it looks like I'll mostly be using the old 35mm 2.0.
