p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Question about Canon 400mm 5.6L lens????

My question is , Can I use 400mm 5.6L lens with a 2x extender on my 1D Mark IV & still have auto focus?? I heard that some camera lose AF with this lens when using a extender. If you use this setup can you post a image with either a 1.4 or 2x .Thanks Paul

2X is f11 will not AF. I have used the 1.4X on a 1D11n and it is still sharp, though it does lose some detail, but AF is slower.

The 1 series upto the mk4 can AF down to f8 . But that's centre point only . All other points are f5.6

Non 1 series bodies are 5.6 . (5d3 gets a firmware upgrade for f8 soon I think)

I've taped 2x tc on a 100-400 and could get AF on the middle point (it thinks its a 5.6 lens) but the AF was pretty iffy and you needed quite a lot of light.

Also 800mm f11 with no IS . I hope it's either very bright or you have a great set of legs and the subject is a statue

Adding a 1.4x on the 400 f5.6 makes it quite dark through the viewfinder...and AF slows down a bit even on the 1D4. I cannot even imagine how dark adding a 2x would make it! I concur with Ian. Shooting with an 800mm @ f11 would require mid-day sun AND high ISOs, and a static subject... That said, when I owned my 400mm f4 DO, I would add a 2x to it from time to time to get a shot which I could not get otherwise. Sharpness was acceptable, but the camera/lens combo still needed to be on a tripod.

I used the 400 5.6 with a 2X extender on a tripod for an eagle's nest (a set target) with a fledgling youngster and was not unhappy with the results, but I used Liveview focusing, which is not limited by the focal ratio, as long as there is enough light.

I am anxious to see the results with the 400 5.6 with 1.4X extender and my 5DIII with the F8 firmware upgrade.

How active are your intended targets?

Steven

I tried with 1.4x; only the center focal point works. The IQ is somewhat OK, all static objects:

I find the 5D III to work OK with the 400mm F5.6 / 1.4x TC
I posted examples in these threads ...

You would probably not be happy with the results anyway. Even most examples posted with the 1.4x are not as sharp as the bare 400.

no lens with a 1.4x will ever be as sharp as the bare lens

Given the 400mm F5.6 is so sharp bare it works with the 1.4x for good IQ
the extra 1.4x can make a big difference in capturing detail

I am happy with the results of 400mm f5.6/Tamron 1.4X TC combo
should be even better with Canon 1.4X III TC once the F8 firmware is available

Good luck. You will find AI Servo AF pretty sad with that combo and eagles in flight. You would probably get better results with the 1.4x and uprezing.

these are real world examples of the 5D III / Tamron SP AF 1.4x TC / 400mm f5.6 lens

You can focus birds in flight with 400mm F5.6 / 1.4X TC. Yes, it is slower than the bare lens.
I suspect the Canon 1.4X III will be a bit better.
