p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 6D either discharged or died, with power save ON

My only battery is charging right now, so I don't know for sure, but-

Last night i left my 6D on, on the coffee table.
This morning i grabbed it on the way out the door. Went to take a shot, and nothing. Flipped power switch back and forth, still nothing. Ran inside, pulled the battery and tossed it in the charger. Charger blinked a few times, then stopped.
Threw battery back in camera. A few blinks from the card LED. Power switch. Nothing.

Now I'm at work, battery seems to be properly charging. We'll see in a bit.

I have power save set at 1min(default, right?). I've never had a Canon or Nikon drain the battery overnight with power save turned on.
This is a bit of a shocker to me, honestly.

Before anyone asks- yes this is official Canon battery and charger.

GPS/WiFi were off, camera was off (via power save).
I only turn GPS/WiFi on when using them. Until now, the 6D's battery life had been thoroughly impressing me.

OK-
False alarm, somehow the battery died.

Question:
I have 1min Power Save turned on.
Below that is a setting for "LCD off/on btn"- default setting is "remains on". I'm not completely sure what this means.

Is the 6D battery chipped so that other batteries do not work? If so, perhaps the internal electronics died.

I never turn off my 5D2/7D and the batteries are good for many weeks--even months--as battery drain nominal as long as no buttons are being pressed. On the other hand, the 6D has GPS and Wi-Fi so those functions increase battery drain if left enabled.

FWIW my 5D3 loses about 6% overnight when left on but in 'sleep' mode, I assume it's a trickle it uses to wake the camera fast.

Wow. 6% is HUGE. 3 weeks in sleep mode and the battery is gone ?
My 400D and it's 5 year old batteries do sooooo much better

My camera was at over 90% last night when left on the table.
GPS and WiFi were both OFF.
I don't know how it could have drained overnight, but it was 100% dead. D E D, DEAD.

Are you sure GPS and WiFi were off? Anyway, all new 6D users should look closely to the communication settings of the 6D. We are all used to battery lifes for our EOS-es until eternity, but this is not true for the 6D. As already said above, GPS and WiFi are real powerhungry. When these are on without further attention the batteries will drain rapidly. We have some experience when demoing the 6D in the camerastore already. Consumption is much more like smartphones and compacts with communication features. The camera is imo a great piece of EOSfun, but this is one of it's downsides in comparison to former models.

@ ISO 1600:
But now it is recharged and camera works?
Let it on and watch if it happenes again, please.

@ eosfun:
Any problems when GPS/WIFI is off, too?

Maybe you put it in a bag and had one of the buttons accidentally pressed by something in the bag?

it was sitting out, no bag/case, on table.
GPS and WIFI were both off, to the fullest extent. Drained full battery overnight, somehow.
Now everything seems fantastic!

What lens do you have mounted?
It's happened in the past that certain lenses have drained batteries while the camera was off/in sleep mode.
Seem to remember firmware updates were needed to sort

Maybe this is obvious but have you asked around to see if your spouse/boyfriend/girlfriend/family member/son/daughter/pet/etc. happened to use it? That could explain the battery being empty.

Ralph, not really problems, no. GPS and WiFi are obviously taking their share of the battery. In my opinion completely normal. I am just pointing this out to set expectations straight. As I said, most Canon D-SLR photographers are used to thousands of shots from their cameras, but the new 6D needs more charges if the GPS and WiFi communication modules are used intensively. Just something to take into account. The features are really great EOSfun (especially the WiFi and EOS-remote) but they take their share of battery power. TANSTAAFL.

So there is no option for the GPS and WiFi to time out after some minutes? It is rather lame that it is necessary to turn the power switch off like on my 1972 camera.

The GPS and WIFI can be turned completely OFF in the menus. That is how they were that night.
The lens mounted was the 40/2.8 STM.
My wife and 8mo old son did not mess with it.
There was a SD card in the camera.
It was not raining outside.
Power save set at 1 min.

LAST night, i left the GPS on, but turned the camera off. I at least think i turned it off. This morning, it was full charge still.

Lesson from this story? As of yet, I don't completely trust the battery and/or camera, so i need to get another LPE6.
Until we figure out what could have caused it, I'll make sure and keep a very careful eye on the power.
