Well, driving an old Citroen 2CV is only marginally faster than walking briskly

And on this trip through Europe I drove the car about 10,000 miles.
What a fun car it was: 4-door, front-wheel drive, centrifugal clutch, air-cooled 2 cylinder engine, canvas top that rolled back, and a gear-shifting pattern that could only have been designed by the French. Gadzooks! I loved that car!
Top speed was 50 MPH. Gasoline consumption- 50 MPG.

Yeah, traveling in Europe by car was pretty nifty: partly because of where the car took me, and partly because of where it stopped me.
Trains in Europe go everywhere, but they only stop in cities and the bigger towns. My 2CV often stopped on the sides of mountains so I could have a picnic of fresh bread, local cheese and salami, tomatoes and a local red wine. The car found me some lovely vistas.
I had bought the reconditioned Citroen 2CV (called Ugly duck in Holland) for US$400, but that was a very long time ago.
