p.1 #1 · Nikon 50 1.4D or 50 1.8G for Weddings?

For $25 more, I can get a used 1.4D. Which one would be an ideal lens for weddings?

I'd probably just go with the 1.4 in that case. Focus speed won't be super fast though, but should be good enough.

Why do say that? The 1.4 D would focus faster on those bodies (at least on the D300) than the 1.8 G I would think.

Personally I don't which lens I would rather have. I currently have the 1.4D, but I've been considering the 50 1.8G as it seems everyone loves it. I love the 85 1.8G. The only thing I dislike about the 1.4 D is it doesn't handle flare well and all the new glass seems to be very good at that.

I've shot my 50 1.8G at a cousins wedding with the D90 with little light to help me. Personally, I wouldn't use the 50 on a DX camera. Maybe on FX but if I were doing a wedding, i'd much prefer the 17-55 or the 24-70 2.8 *with light permitting*. But, if it was me to choose either choices (1.4 or 1.8), the 1.8G is stuck with my camera. Up the ISOs and pictures can turn up pretty decent.

Nathan, glad to know you mentioned the flare issues with the 1.4D. I wonder if the 1.8G has the same issues or if it is coated to prevent from less flares.

2 of 9, nothing against zoom but I love my primes (24 1.4G, 28 1.8G, 35 1.8G, 60 2.8G and 85 1.8G). I do however have a UWA 12-24 zoom. Besides I rarely shoot weddings and events. Most of the times I shoot seniors, portrait and family.

I sold my 1.4d and have the 1.8g, no regrets, I love my G. I use it w d7k and d700.
