Lots of great photographers in this thread. I thought I would ask for help and advice in here vs. starting a new thread, since it is on the same subject matter, and lots of experienced people here.
My equip: 20D, 18-135, and a 540EZ.
I bought the 540 back in the film days. I never used it that much...and have never used it with a DSLR. I also only used it for static subjects. I would like to get some shots of cars cruising this w/e at night. There should be quite a bit of street light...the cars, I imagine at only 10mph or so. Just cruising from traffic light to traffic light. Handheld.
Will the 540 be of any help ? I could be around 10-15ft. from the cars. Is there a way to achieve good AF in low light ? It seems my 20D never wants to lock the AF in low light. I won't be able to tell anything from the small LCD about the focus. Just looking for recommendations on setup with my equip. and described conditions.
Thanks. ...Show more →
Your 540EZ flash should have a focus assist beam that can help your lenses focus in low light, have a look at your 20D's manual to see if you have "Focus Assist Beam On" in the menus.
The 18-135 might be too slow for night shooting, but you can also turn off the auto focus and prefocus the lens manually. This will be pretty easy to do on the wide angle side of your lens, but quite a bit trickier if you want to zoom in.
If you find yourself shooting in low light often enough you might want to pick up a faster lens like the Canon EF 50 1.8 or the EF 35 F2.
