p.1 #1 · First game strobing with Einstein

This year I upgraded my gym lighting set up. Last year I had a speedlight on each side of the gym. This year I am going to try an Einstein on one side, and a speedlight on the other side. I would love to try and get another Einstein on the other side of the gym, but the way its configured, there is no way to do so.

Its a work in progress. I still have to work out the kinks and see how I like things. My biggest thing is getting the Einstein and speedlights the same temp and some-what balanced, power wise. These shots were with the Einstein behind me and the speedlights giving a bit of a rim light to whatever I was shooting.

the backgrounds are killing me - they are bright enough and clear enough they distract from the players

In 2, it seems you don't have the strobes high enough power over ambient as evidenced by the blurred ball. Was this intentional?

Einsteins: -2.5 stops
ISO: 500
F/4.0
SS: 250

Mdalby,
Would you mind please explaining the terminology of Einsteins -2.5 stops? Down 2.5 from what?
My confusion is thinking of it min FEC when exposing improperly with AE and without other jeg value the camera would provide too much flash overexposing. What do you mean here?

MD, are you firing direct or bouncing?

for this game I bounced the Einstein and had the speedlights direct.

The Einstein -2.5 is just a power setting. I shoot in Action mode and the power at -2.5f.

To be at -2.5f you must have the Einsteins relatively close to the court and not too high up either judging by the angle of the shadows. For my EMU v Purdue game I was shooting at f/4 and 1/250th and Action mode too, but at ISO800 and -1.0f at a steep angle at +80ft above the court. Obviously proximity and angle makes a huge difference.

Yep, my strobes are usually within 10' of the court, court side along the baseline. The vast majority of the time I use my 16' light stands unless there isn't an option to use them.

Yes that sounds like a great setup! I'm sure that getting the light stands up higher gets the light up above their heads and throws it onto the court a good distance that works well.
