p.2 #1 · Alternative for Canon ES 24-105 IS USM for Canon 50D

Reno,

Thanks for the reply.

Will I not be having an overlap on the lower part providing I have 10-22 already? In addition, will I not be missing from the upper range provising my next lense is 100-400?

In addition, is there perhaps a non-Canon lense I can consider?

Overlap isnt bad, and you dont have to cover every focal mm entirely!

As for non canon lenses, non are as good overall as the 17-55 or 15-85 but there are sigma and tamron 17-50f2.8's and sigma make a 17-70f2.8-4.5, along with some 24-70f2.8's etc.

Well if you use all the focal lengths and don't mind the lens swapping then you may have the best set now.
As I said I thought I was all set but noticed I used my 12-24 very little at other lengths than 12 mm . In fact I'm considering getting either the tokina 11-16 or the sigma 8-16 (although I may get the tok fish zoom) .

Have a good look at the focal lengths you use most. I did which is why I thoug I'd never change from the 24-105 as I used the long end a hell of a lot. BUT trying the 17-55 made me realise I probably was to lazy and relied on the zoom range more than getting into a better position.

One thing I will say is paying for your current lens to be repaired could be a good option. As its likely to be setup well during the repair. It's been noted many times that lenses come back from repair and perform way better than they ever did before.

Will getting Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-II LD SP Aspherical (IF) Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras be a bad idea or I should stick to Canon?

The tamron is a good lens optically but the focus system is clunky.

The VI model is poorer optically.

Sigmas OS variant is probably the best 3rd party option.

Stick with the Canon 24-105L or the 15-85 IS. I was not pleased with slow AF on the Tamron (missed shots), and the optical was not as good as the 15-85. If speed was important to me in this range, I would get the 17-55 IS, even though it is greatly reduced in focal range.

The Canon 15-85mm IS is on par with the 24-105 IS in every way aside from the fixed aperture. Honestly, my Canon 15-85mm lens is the main reason I still use a 50D instead of moving to full frame. The combination of range, focal speed, and IS is pretty much unmatched with full-frame lenses. At $500 for a good used copy, it's a bargain.

You realise that 24-105f4L needs an f2.5 lens on a crop body to compare?

I loved the Tammy 28-75f2.8 but no IS and the focus is slow... it's got pricy new but used it's great value and I have seen them <300 on occasion.

You realize that the 24-105L needs to be 24-136mm (and significantly lighter) to compare?

It's all relative...
