p.1 #1 · Alternative for Canon ES 24-105 IS USM for Canon 50D

All,

I need your help.

My 24-105 broke and I sent it for a repair. Canon came back and asked me for $455 to repair it. Would you perhaps recommend a good alternative to this lense? I am not sure if it is worth paying half the price to have it repaired or just buy some good alternative.

Thanks for your help!

I can't think of another lens with the same focal range and same image quality. Everything cheaper is. . . well, cheaper! That is one of the least expensive "L" zooms, along with the much wider 17-40L.

What was the problem with your lens?

Are you a CPS member? Now might be a good time to spend $100 and save 30% on repairs. I'm not sure if it works for items already at Canon for repair, or if you need to list the gear on your CPS account before sending.

It was giving an error 01, clicking sound when mounted to the camera body as well as extending when the camera facing down.

Shall I rather consider buying a brand new lense instead of having this one repaired and broken down soon? If so, can you recommend a good general purpose lense?

The 24-105L was optimized for full frame cameras like the 5D. On your 50D, a more appropriate lens would be the EF-S 15-85mm IS lens. If you have no plans to switch to full frame anytime soon, that lens would be your best bet.

What do you like to shoot and what equipment do you already have. FMers can give excellent advice knowing your likes.

I have

Canon 50D
10-22
100-400 4.5-5.6

My 24-105 was to cover between these ranges (not sure if I have made the right decision though). Basically I need a general purpose lense for the range I do not have.

Or shall I upgrade my camera and have my 24-105 repaired instead? Please advise on what my options are.

I use a 15-85IS and it is an incredibly sharp lens throughout the range if you can live with the variable aperture. The IS is also noticeably better than that of the 24-105.

You have two impressive full frame lenses there -- the 24-105 and 100-400. If you can afford to upgrade, those would work great on a nice used 5D2, getting the 24-105 repaired. There just isn't anything to match it for the crop sensor. I like the 15-85 IS very much, but that will cost more than repairing the 24-105, and it kind of cancels a lot of the benefit of the 10-22.

Maybe someone has a bright idea for you!

Good luck.

If you liked the range there really isn't anything out there that replicates it. However you don't really have any low light capabilities so maybe consider a 17-55 2.8 that leaves a hole you could fill in with a 85 1.8. If you go used you could get that combo for right around 1k. If not I'd just buy a new 24-105. If you wait till the days leading up to the official release of the 24-70 f4 IS I am sure there will be a bunch of deals for the 24-105 around $750 brand new.

There is a diamond in the rough, the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM for under $500 new. Yes it is also a variable aperture.

From all I've seen the 24-105 is a great lens...I'd probably repair it.

I've been using the old EF 24-85 for 10+ yrs (film and Digital) and love it's size but it's not L grade glass, it's a low cost alternative tho; used it's about $300 or so. There is the 28-135 IS, it's old as well but usable. The only other "Canon" alternative would be the EF-S 15-85 like Guns mentioned...none of these are fixed apreture tho...and all these options are either near your cost to fix or much higher

My best, hope you find or fix you mid range zoom!
Jerry

The price of the 24-105mm had eroded since people are dumping their unwanted kit lens. You can buy one for approximately $700.00 on the B&S board now. A repair price of $455 is on the steep side in my book.

17-55IS. It isn't as long (obviously), but it's a very handy general purpose lens with the widest-for-a-zoom lens aperture and IS, with great image quality and sharp wide open.

17-55 and 15-85 are both great lenses, the 17-55 has constant f2.8, the 15-85 has better IS.

I wouldnt be without a 17-55 on a crop body.

15-85IS may be your best 'crop' match

I had (actually still have) a 24-105L which has seen service on my old 40D and my newer 7D (I've never owned a FF body).
I used to think that it was THE lens for me , I have a 12-24/4 which can do the wide work although it hardly sees any use (other than at 12mm) and I was hitting the long end quite a bit, but never really noticed hitting the wide stop as often. So my assumption was that anything that didn't have the reach was not for me .
Well after much persuading from a couple of guys on here I found a 17-55 at a really good price . So in the knowledge that I was unlikely to loose much I thought I'd give it a go.
Well I was totally go smacked at the difference. I though my 24-105 was good but the 17-55 knocks it for 6 . The IQ is much better and the IS seems to be better as well.
And funnily enough it must have made me shot differently as I use the wide end more and seem to hit the long end stop a lot less than I thought I would

I have a 24-105L on a crop and I love it, at the time I bought mine the 15-85 wasn't available so the 24-105L was the only real option as I wanted more reach than the 17-55 would offer. Also on the subject of the 17-55, another nice lens is the Tamron 17-50 (non vc) it's fast, sharp and light and good value for money!!

17-55 f/2.8 IS would be my suggestion. I'm also "one" of the guys that persuaded Ian!!!
I did for the first few years also have a stellar copy of the 24-105L, but I second Joshua's note that
the repair cost is a bit high.

Thanks!

I may be shifting the discussion a bit, but I would like to ask some more questions.

You are saying that I am not getting the most of my L lenses (10-22, 24-105, and 100-400) if I am using 50D? If that is the case I would probably consider upgrading the camera.

If I decided to upgrade my camera, what would be my options? Basically I would like to make a full use of the lenses I have. Or shall I rather consider replacing the 24-105 as well? If so, what would be its upgrade (should I get a FF camera)

You always get good results from good lenses regardless of body.

The 18mp sensor bodies are a little better for IQ than the 50d but not so much its worth upgrading.

10-22 wont work with a FF body and isnt L but optically is as good as one.

Get the 17-55 it wont dissapoint.
