p.5 #1 · Head or heart purchasing?

Head or heart? Neither, NAS.
I would buy the AF-S Nikkor 200 f/2 and the 300 f/2.8 used if I had the money.
If mint and taken care of they both would be very good investments.
My best old glass has all gone up in value over the years.

As for the 24-70, unless priced right used, I would wait for the VR version.
Not that there is any thing wrong with it, but I have a 28-70 already.
I was debating whether to take it to Pinnacles today and decided on the 28-300
due to the range and I will probably be shooting at f/8 anyway.

Ok, 200mm f2 VR2, aka The Chub is sitting on my sofa!! Woop woop.

Quick initial observations.... This lens is stupid sharp wide open! Haven't stopped it down yet but apparently it gets sharper! blimey. Bokeh exceeds anything I've ever used. The weight when strapped to the D4 isn't half as offensive as I was expecting. Very pleased about that. Ergonomics are interesting. I actually find it easier to hold leaving the tripod foot attached and resting that in my hand.

Will get some sample shots up soon.

I also had a look and play with the Siggy 35f1.4 and that is a seriously fine piece of glass. Build quality was simply beautiful and the IQ was astonishing. I don't see any reason to even consider the Nikon version over this one.

The quick snaps I grabbed in the store....

50% crop.

100% crop.

All shots are with sharpening set to 0. Anything above 2 on the sharpening starts to become too sharp and makes the images look odd. These were shot at f2!! The slight sign of grain from the ISO setting is apparent which reduces the sharpness ever so slightly so I can only imagine what this lens will do at ISO100 at 100% crop.

Shots from the store do not count as proof of purchase

Looks like a soft lens, after all, nobody is bleeding in these pictures

I think you have fallen in love ...

Nice examples of bokeh and sharpness ct8282. The dude in the 2nd, 3rd & 4th pics looks a little annoyed about something. Maybe he's just jealous over your new lens.

IMO the 200 f/2 balances a lot better on the pro bodies. Found the weight just gets a little tiring after ten minutes or so. Because you work out at the gym then you've got an advantage there for sure.

Found the absolute sharpest aperture on chubby to be around f/3.2.

Lol. I think he was a little annoyed coz I get pointing this bazooka looking thing right at him. Ha ha.

Can't wait for some daylight and a chance to get the hang of this huge hunk of glass. Quick analysis shows that focus is bang on perfect but I'll double check fine tuning tomorrow with some proper light.
