The AF is improved in low light, but pretty much the same as the original K5 in bright light. That said, I do find that the camera does hunt if I'm not keeping the selected focus point right on the subject. Difficult sometimes with surfer depending on how radical their maneuvering is. Please note, I haven't shot any of the latest Canon or Nikon bodies so I do not have a reference point to compare them to the IIs' AF system. Let me just say that it performs well enough for my uses.
