p.1 #1 · Aftermarket 1.4 TC's

Are there any aftermarket 1.4 TC's that equal the IQ of the Nikon TC-14E II ? The lens is a 300 F4 AFS and it will be used on a D800. Or should I just bite the bullet and get the Nikon one?

Buy the Nikon TC-14E series unless you have an older lens that does not accept one. In that case get the Kenko pro TC.

Kenko is the one to go with, if you need screwdriver AF coppling.

I have a grey market used TC14II.

there isn't much to break in one of them, so if you buy new, you can save a few dollars.

I don't think they even have the 1+4 year warranty on teleconverters anyways, so it really should not matter when it comes to warranty stuff.

I had a Tamron 1.4x I used on a 80-200 AFD that I was happy with. Just be sure you are getting the SP version and not the junky MC4. I didn't use it often, so for the $$ it served its purpose.

It really depends on the lens. As said, there are occasions a nikon tc cannot handle.

The Kenko 1.4x Pro 300 is a great TC if you're low on the $$$, but if you have the $$$ then get the Nikon 1.4x

+1. If you want critical sharpness then you need to spend the extra $$ on the Nikon, otherwise the Kenko Pro 300 is pretty good. I had the 2X version of the Kenko with the 80-200 AF-D and it was decent enough.

You've just dropped $3K on a state of the art body, don't cheap out on a converter.

It blows me away that people would even consider this! This is no different than putting cheap off brand tires on a $100,000 Mercedes!

Are we parroting Nikon elitism, or speaking from personal usage There was a thorough study a few years back
(some German guy IIRC) and he tested all the 1.4x TCs. The Kenko TelePlus Pro 300 DG was as sharp as the Nikon
in the center and actually a hair faster to AF than the Nikon The only knock against it was it turned out to be a
little softer in the corners, on FX. This mirrors my experience on a couple of cough decent primes 200 f2/300 2.8
with the D3/D700. I'd use one again in a heartbeat, and seriously doubt you could tell the difference.

Usually the "off brand tires on a $100,000 Mercedes" is reserved for non-Gitzo tripods.
