I really like these, even with the background...maybe a tad cool in the shadows as you'd expect, but these are still great!

Thanks, Brian!

HI, I like the shots a lot and I'm wanting to get out to do more outdoors / environmental portraits myself. Would you care to share your lighting ? Were you using HSS on speedlights, what shutter, iso etc ? Gels ?
Freezing the action outdoors with flash is difficult I find and you seem to have achieved it very well.

Thanks, Rob.

Hi Rob,

Thanks! The idea was to shoot HSS but I'm a doof and didn't have the settings right. The idea, anyway, was not to freeze the dancer with the flash, but simply to provide fill. When I shoot in my studio with my Einsteins, I like to freeze the dancers with a flash duration speed of 1/5000 or even faster. But outdoors, I want to utilize the ambient light in the background.

The flash probably does sharpen the outline of the dancer some, but I was shooting at 1/250, f/2.8, and ISO 640. In the final shot with the back lighting, it was 1/200, f/2.8 and ISO 800. Used an SB-910 speed light off camera probably at a pretty low setting. No gels.
