Those look just like what the 1DX looks like. After playing with 6D files from Focus numerique, I'm pretty sure the 6D has pretty much the same sort of performances at low ISO than the 1DX, that is to say, slightly better than the 5DIII. At higher ISOs, I think that it slots in between the two. So, basically, for still photography, the 6D has a better sensor than the 5DIII.

The samples come from this website : http://www.focus-numerique.com/test-1566/reflex-canon-6d-exemples-photos-15.html

Only way to know that for sure is when we get samples from both cameras with identical lighting/exposure, incorporating any nominal ISO differences between the two bodies.

It doesn't bother Canon either. The history is full of examples of sensor improvements showing up in less expensive cameras.

On of the small secrets in that reagrd was the 500D, with 15 MP sensor. It had cleaner shadows than the 50D that came just before it. Counting per sensor area, it was also better than the 5DII. The 18 MP sensors that came later, introduced a new type of vertical banding both in the deep shadows and in the higlhights (visible only after heavy post-processing). The 500D didn't have any of these faint "problems". It was really a gem in

True, but after all that has been made about DR I still think Canon would know that people would go ape if they held up new tech for a few months and toss it in the 6D and leave it out of the 5D3/1DX. Then again it is (recent-day) Canon.

Well good for you, you bought a 5D3 to take pictures.
Personally I sit in a lab all day long and take black frames and am proud to say I have yet to snap a single click that was not a black frame. Nobody could ever want more DR outside of a lab scenario.

I believe these files get close to what you're looking for (and these are the ones I base my estimations on) : http://www.focus-numerique.com/test-1566/reflex-canon-6d-bruit-electronique-12.html

Playing again with the files from focus numerique. We can see more banding on the 5D3.

When I saw that last image, I saw the bottom file and though if thats the 6D it is amazing.

Then I saw the name - D600.

Lol

Looking at the edge of the frame, the black outer masked part it looks (measured SNR in Iris) better than the 5D3 and perhaps even a trace better than the 1DX (5.0 vs 5.3 ADU and 6D also has just a trace more MP) but not close to an Exmor. It might have about the best DR at low ISO that Canon has made so far, maybe about like the 1Ds3. Seems like the 6D,1Ds3,1DX will be Canon's best for low ISO DR most likely. Still a far cry, from Exmor/Aptina/etc., as expected.

Does make their 5D3 effort look just a bit weak sensor-wise. It can hardly be that it needed expensive 1DX tech now can it?

Anyway, hopefully this is not off of the new fab line otherwise.... may be YEARS before Canon ever catches up. I doubt it is the new line though. Looks like it is maybe just a 1DX-fab variant (although need to see what it does at high iso too first).

But it's not a bad result for the 6D just not state of the art (at least not at low ISO, perhaps at high) in this day and age.

Almost as good as 1Dx, but far away from D600/D800.

Visibly better performance from the 6D.

Hopefully this test gets done at ISO 800 or 1600. I almost never shoot at 100.

But honestly, I can't even remember the last time I had to boost an image more than 1.5 stops or so! It was maybe 6 or 8 years ago.

So the differences in AF performance (and the 5D3 is the champ) are WAY more important to me than these shadow boosting tests.

After using the new CapOne 7 to process one of those RAWs, I must say that the 6D files seem very D600 like in terms of it's DR and general image quality IMO.

I came close to buying a D600 a week ago, but as good as the D600 sensor is, my test shots with the Nikon 24 PC-E left me a little flat.... after processing the 6D RAW, I am now confident that my 24 TS-E on a 6D will make for a much better combo in terms of IQ. I think the minimal loss (if any) in terms of sensor/megapixels will be more than made up for by the better image quality produced by the TS-E over the PC-E.

It seems to me that Canon could making a bit of a sensor come-back (in this resolution bracket at least) and the entire "system" needs to be considered again when making a purchase.

It's not that they're making a sensor comeback. In this market, the manufacturers only react to the market, ie. They only offer "more" when they have to. (Un)fortunately, Canon has the biggest portion of the market so don't ever expect them to come up with something better before the competition. You can see it with the Video and AF. Nikon was first to offer video and first to offer highend AF in their cheaper body.

That said, you can expect Canon to "one-up" Nikon. Again, you can see it with the video and AF.

The 6D looks better than the 5d3 - doesn't show the same banding pattern, though all of these are pretty weak compared to the d600. Would be interested to see what the d800 would do with this test.

Mostly because I got a great deal on the refurb Canon 85/35/70-200.

Partly because I'm a grass is greener kind of guy
