p.1 #1 · Nikon 70-200 VRII - Aperture seems stuck

With my 70-200 VRII on either my D4 or D800, the exposure barely changes between f/2.8 and f/8, and then doesn't change at all between f/8 and f/22. It seems as though the aperture in the lens is stuck. This is confirmed in Live View, as I can hear the aperture trying to move, but the exposure barely changes. The orientation and positioning of all the pins looks normal, and I tried re-seating the lens a number of times. Any other ideas before I pack this up and ship it to Nikon?

Is this a trick question? Exposures are perfect....as long as the lighting matches the shutter speed, ISO, and stuck aperture settings.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought SJMS meant how is the DOF? Can you tell the difference between 2.8 , 8, and all stops in between?

Next. Is the lens still in warranty? No matter what, it's a repair from Nikon. Hasta la vista Baby!

Take the lens off and move the little lever to see if the aperture blades are moving freely

You need to look into the lens and observe the aperture blades. What happens when the stop-down button is pressed at f/22?

Also with the camera on the lens, press the DOF preview button while looking in to the lens, and if it moves when not on the camera but doesn't move on the camera, then it may be the camera, not the lens.

I was thinking about that, but two defective cameras? That is unlikely unless the lever is damaging the cameras.

The issue is that the spring-loaded lever is sticking instead of moving freely, and there's no visual evidence of anything being bent or out of alignment. It should be a pretty easy fix, although I'm skeptical about Nikon's turnaround time.

The lens was shipped to Nikon in NY on 11/26, and it was returned in like new condition on 12/11. Nikon's tracking system isn't particularly useful, but their overall service was great.
