I was shooting the finals for the Northern Ontario division, the winner goes on to the provincial finals in Toronto. I was assigned to photograph the North Bay team who were undefeated so far that season but Sault Ste Marie high school teams have taken the division for something like 12 years so North Bay were not the odds-on favorite coming in and were defeated 38-10.
Every time I have shot a championship before I have followed the winners. Get some emotional jubo shots, get a shot with the trophy and go home. It was so much harder shooting the emotions of defeat, trying to give them a respectful distance but also trying to get close to capture compelling emotional images.
Once it got close to the end of the game I took off my 300mm and put on the 16-35mm and was lucky enough to have a tackle almost in my lap:

Immediately after the horn the players found comfort consoling each other.

The coach had a quick pep talk with the boys. I have some with the coach but shot this one with the foreground player tearing up.

This player had to break away from the huddle to compose himself.
4.
As I was leaving the bench area I saw the player on the left approach the player on the right who was upset. The player on the left knelt down and they touched heads in silence.
