Absolutely stunning. How far was the subject distance in those first two?

Thanks Dude!

About 3-4 feet away.

More shots to come.
Congrats Morty, Joe!
Happy shooting everyone!

Sorry, I have only shot ZF/ZE versions and Michael is asking about how it compares to ZM versions which are optically different.

I only meant that I thought you were most likely to make a shot with a sharp, distant horizon and 100% crop, not a full comparison.

I actually prefer the SOOC in this comparison

It's probably my imagination but I'm starting to like SOOC from Sony whereas I used to hate it... My RX1 and RX100 SOOC shots almost make shooting the gigantic RAW's not worth it for casual snapshots of family / non "formal" shots.

I agree with Vern, I just shot an entire weekend of friends, hiking, wine tasting, food, indoors and outdoors stuff with my RX100 in jpeg only mode and found no faults, in camera processing was excellent, indoors, outdoors, anything I shot, real pleasing results. Sony these days has an excellent jpeg engine.

Interesting, I find this boke to be more Leica-like than Zeiss-like, although the contrast is definitely Zeiss.

Hi Carsten, thanks for this, it puts in words exactly how I have been trying to describe what I see in the test images that have been emerging these past few days.

I feel that way about the rx100. There's practically no point unless its REALLY contrasty.

My rx1 just arrived but I'm having second thoughts so it sits unopened.

Honestly the fastest way to second guess a camera purchase before it arrives is to spend time at dp review. I gotta stop going to that place.

The few pictures in this thread tell me a lot more. The one concern is whether the af is 'event fast'

Bingo! I think you nailed the characteristics very well with that simple statement. In fact, I see many similarities with the 28/2 Summicron which is contrasty, has smooth bokeh and gives bold colors. I haven't found all of these properties at the same time in other Zeiss lenses.

Had to beat Lloyd at posting the first shot of my buddy Jacques with RX1!
A couple of landscape snaps too for those that wanted to see an example.

What, no 100% crops Wayne? What are you trying to hide?

Bokeh on this lens is certainly attractive.

Don't have time to post crops right now.

Cute dog shot Vern! Nice work from everyone else too.

Some shots from yesterday. It was -15C and I was out with some friends, so I just snapped away. I'll try and get some better photos soon, maybe a few landscapes today.

All of these are at f/2 and processed in Lightroom 4.3 (but they looked great already so I didn't have to do much):

This is a near 100% crop at 1600 ISO, not too bad:

Nice examples Helena. Second one looks great.
I don't like the bokeh on the first photo, but the lens does seem to have a character. I like character in a lens.

Thanks Jochen! I find saturation a bit high, but that can easily be fixed/turned down if it starts to bother me. Everything is at "Standard" now and it seems like LR reads it, because when I open the RAWs they look almost exactly like the JPGs. Obviously I can reduce saturation in LR, but I'd prefer to start with a slightly more neutral look, I think. I'll do some experimenting.

Out of curiosity, what is it that you don't like? And what other 35 mm lens would you choose to make a "better" job in this situation?

It looks somewhat harsh to me, but I like it on the last photo. Could be the scene.
I feel the 35/1.4 ZE/ZF handles difficult situations better.
At mid-distance wide open... the 35/1.4 can also look harsh, but for closeup shots I still think it's king of the hill.

I'm only talking about the bokeh here. The 35/1.4 doesn't have the same "pop" this sonnar seems to have.

I'm not sure, but maybe the apparent harshness in the first photo is caused by the spotted lights in the background. If I can find the time maybe I'll do a comparison between RX1 and ZE35/1.4, just out of curiosity.
