I use 2 d3s cameras and love them for sports. Sometimes, when the image is cropped i wish it had more pixels. Have the d4 users experienced better cropping from their d4 and is it worth the upgrade, different battery etc thanks

You can upsize to 16 or even 20mp and then crop with little loss of IQ with the D3s. I did this all the time when I owned one.

Depends on the subject matter (portraits, some sports, wildlife, sure, landscapes, no). I'm not afraid of a little cropping on my D4, but I don't want to do as far as say a DX crop either, not if I'm trying for large prints.

That said, I've seen 40 and even 60 inch prints from a full res shot with the D4 at Nikon's own booth last PMA, so with the right subject, great glass, and prefect focus it's pretty amazing what you can pull off.

I think it depends on your budget.
The D4 is better, but it will cost a lot to upgrade.

I went to a camera store with my lens and CF card
tried it and zoomed in on the images at home.
Or you could borrow or rent one.

How do you up size to 16/20mp on the D3s as you have mentioned.

When I had a D1 I used Qimage
Now I use a D800 for large prints.

You can upsize or downsize with most photo editors.
I use ACDSee to reduce to 800 wide for web use
but it will go the other way too.

ACR or phtoshop will allow you to upsize. Once you upsize you crop down.

At the end of the day you still only have 12.5mp to play with. If you want more MP you have to buy them.

I have both cameras. The D4 is a bit better for cropping but the biggest advantage are the controls for fast action. Really expensive since when you get a D4 you will want two.

i went from a d3s to a d4 a couple of months ago, and definitely enjoy the slight cropping edge, especially for wildlife. i posted some heavily cropped bif pix in the nature board last night...i wasn't all that thrilled with the images at first, but when i considered how far away i was, shooting handheld bif to get a few decent ones, the camera is clearly pretty impressive..i wish it could help me get closer to the animals!

The Japan government killed the old batteries.

But the new ones are actually quite good as is the XQD card.

I think you will be able crop a Landscape Image to Portrait and still get close to what you would with the D3s in full Portrait orientation.
The D4 Sensor is that good.
