Now that we have a lot more people with 5D MKIII, I wanted to talk to folks that are using this body with Zeiss 35 1.4 ZE. Do you happen to use it for street or people photography? Can you share your experience in terms of focusing? Easy, difficult? Did you replace your focusing screen? Found another solution?

The 5DIII does not have interchangeable screens. This is the #1 reason I didn't upgrade from the 5DII. I manual focus a lot and the canon super precision matte helps a ton with fast glass. You will basically need to rely on AF confirmation light with a 5DIII if you are shooting wider than 2.8 at close distances. You will see more DOF in the VF than there actually is because of the way the stock screen is optimized for light falling on the center of the screen. They optimize the stock screens to make slow zooms like f4 and 5.6 bright enough to work with. Light falling on the edges of the stock screen is wasted (large aperture light is wasted).

Still, cannot fully understand, what is the real reason behind the inability to supply interchangeable screen produced by Canon for MKIII.

www.focusingscreen.com do sell a precision matte screen and instructions on how to install it in a 5Dmk3.. I do not know how well it works but I have been considering it since I bought my first Zeiss lens and want more.

@Light Pilgrim - You just can't get over your issue with the Zeiss 35mm f/1,4 in combination with the 5D3! You post the same questions over and over and over in different forums. How many times have you asked this question in the Alt. forum in different threads!!!

I am sorry, sir - I suspected that there is going to be someone like you saying something like this. I am not being rude to anybody, not being negative, not being sarcastic, not being offensive. Like the IQ, cannot crack the MF with MKIII - what is so hard to understand? I gave it a break for few months and got back to this lens again to try it and see whether there is another solution.

I do not need 1000s of answers like this one. One is enough from somebody who knows what I am talking about. That's it.

I'm not saying you're being rude or negative but the situation is no different now than several months ago. The 35mm Distagon which is my primary lens, is extremely difficult to use wide open on the 5D3 with the stock focusing screen.

The autoconfirm and MA can get you very good rates of in focus shots with the other Zeiss lenses wide open, but the 35mm Distagon is not one of them.

I have a 90% in focus rate with my 5D2 using the special matt screen (I think it's the Eg-S) but when I spent 4 days using a 5D3, my in focus rate was under 60%!

I'm just surprised you have not made a decision yet about this problem - just buy a 3d party screen and your problem will be solved.

I know what you are talking about. I gave you a detailed answer.

Buy an aftermarket screen and try it. I'll bet your metering will be off. Shoot with live view. Buy yourself a zfinder or external monitor. Or get the 35L or that new sigma.

If the aftermarket screen is viable, I may actually get a 5DIII.

I bought the 35mm Samyang f/1.4. Same issue. Nothing more needs to be said.
(1) rely on the 5DIII AF confirmation
(2) buy a 3rd party screen
(3) use a canon screen in a 5DII or 1DII(III)s

You bet. I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger. When I do I will write an article on my blog about my experience with it.. Since I cannot find a single thing on the net about them.

I really don't understand what is happening to this forum If you really are that enoyed with a thread....why do you read it ? By posting and spreading your hate you are just keeping the thread alive......if everyone is enoyed by a thread it will just fade away....problem solved. You end up polluting this forum much more then the one you accuse of posting something of your dislike.

But Peter, don't you see? They whine until someone speaks up so they can then accuse you for the very thing they're guilty of, it's called "psychological projection". It's also known as "level 2 trolling".

The only problem with 3rd party focusing screens is that it will affect the metering system and you lose the warranty.

I bet the metering is off in a consistent fashion, in which case you can EV your way to happiness. As for the warranty, just go for it. Were you going to sell your camera when the warranty expired? If not, just pretend you're entering your thirteen month of ownership and modify it however you see fit.
