p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 14-24 or 24-70 for Namibian Trip?

Hello to all,

I am heading to Namibia in 1 1/2 weeks and need your advice.
I will be touring the country with my own car and photograph all I can.

I currently own the 28-70:2.8 and I am wondering if I should buy a 14-24:2.8 and keep the 28-70 or sell the 28-70 and buy a 24-70.

Many thanks for your help.

YD.

Keep the 28-70. It's a solid lens in itself and you won't see much benefit in upgrading to the 24-70 especially for the cost. Many even prefer the 28-70 feel over the 24-70, you'll definitely see marginal improvement on that front if you decide to upgrade.

I'd definitely go with the 14-24 for this trip, the wide angle will definitely pay off and the longer end will make up for the "loss" from the 28-70 compared to the 24-70. The 14 will be a truly unique perspective, and the combination of both lenses creates a sick kit for any sort of landscapes.

I went to Namibia in September/October and I took the following gear with me:
D800/D700 + grips
200-400VR, 70-200VRII, 24-120VRII, 16-35VR
An used them in that other.
I used the 16-35 only at Deadvlei (Sossusvlei).
So, for me there was no real need for a super wide. You always can stitch.

Nikonsafari, I was in Germany in October, out of the 3 lenses that I took, 80% of my pics were taken with my Tokina 12-24 F4, the rest with the 18-200.

Enjoy your trip.

Thanks Chris, I was also thinking about using a ultra wide angle lens in Deadvlei and the Namib Desert in general.

Thanks for your input Eltano

A few from Deadvlei with the 16-35VR.

BTW if you're staying in the middle and/or south of Namibia the common language is German or South-African (kind of Ducth )

Chris, those shots are awesome. I can't wait to be in Deadvlei as well, it will be the last 3 days of my trip. Before I will do the usual, which is Etosha, Damaraland and the Coast

Agree with comments, great to have 14-24, but it will get 10% of the use.

I was in Namibia just over a year ago - a wonderful place. As a photographer, you will be in heaven.

I did a little writeup on my blog about the trip including the gear I took. Hopefully you might find something of use in it:

Enjoy Namibia - I plan to visit again soon.

I can provide no advice beyond what's already been given, but I would like to thank the contributors to this thread for posting a lot of good, and photographically inspiring stuff.

I have not been in Namibia, so I don't know what the lens requirements really are. However, I have both the 14-24 and the 24-70 and they are both excellent lenses. However, I rarely use the 14-24. It is very useful indoors when you have a small area and a wide scene. But I would think in Namibia you will be spending a lot of time outdoors.

The 14-24 would be useful in taking landscape shots, but on a trip the lens is bulky and inconvenient to carry. It takes up a lot of space on your bag and the large front element is kind of scary, being so vulnerable. As a result, most of my (local) landscapes for which 24mm is not wide enough are taken with the 24, portrait orientation, 3-6 shots panning, and stitched together in post.

Stitching is not hard. There is software that does it well. I use PhotoShop CS5 and it works, although there are several setup options that I sometimes have to try out. To be really certain of a good result, 30% or more overlap on the shots is recommended. I always do it handheld and 95% of the time it works. There are a few tries that for some reason PhotoShop doesn't seem to match up and stitching attempts result in two separate regions. I suspect in those cases more overlap would have helped, although I never know because the processing is long after I've taken the shot and I can't repeat it. For that reason I recommend you try each panorama twice. Digital pictures are free.

You can get special mounts for your camera that help keep the lens in the right position to get a good multi-shot panorama, but that plus a tripod is bulkier and less convenient than a 14-24.

If it were me going on a trip that might include both landscapes and wild animal encounters, I would take the 24-70 and the 70-200 and maybe a teleconverter.
