Except that the eye picture (thus, of course the source image) was taken at f/5.6. The EXIF is there and someone called the author out on this. The pic with the other guy was at f/1.4

Eye see In the comments he claimed it was wide open. Naughty... Ah well, guess my little tongue in cheek attempt has fallen on its ass Still going to be an epic and very expensive D/SLR lens...

Sure, the price seems to be encroaching on Leica territory... but I guess the lens will be optimized for wide open contrast like, oh say, the Noct-Nikkor 58/1.2 and UNLIKE most of the current/recent 50/1.4s... Thus it will likely have a cult following (but this humble shooter would rather go with a Sigma 50 or Tamron 60 anyways). For the money, however, I think they should've made it at least somewhat faster, like f/1.2, if only to make a statement.
Getting back to the topic at hand though... am I the only one who is wondering what Sigma's next move could be? A 24? A 135? Redesigning and rebadging the existing 1.4s? Anyone have any ideas?

Not sure if this was posted yet, but the Lenstip review is also up and very worth reading.
The resolution is incredible, and I've never seen such well controlled chromatic aberration and coma, especially not on a wider+large aperture lens.
I LOVE my Canon 35L. I'm constantly amazed at how sharp it is wide open. I couldn't have imagined a lens that could tempt me to sell it, but I'll admit that I'm ready to do a side-by-side comparison.

I think 24mm has a wider market and look like a logical next step.
This interview make me think 135mm is lower priority: http://www.lenstip.com/index.php?art=135

Reading the interview, the new 120-300mm 2.8 OS is only having an aesthetic change and not the optical, etc... probably with extra buttons on it, perhaps AF limiter and hopefully the price will stay similar to the 2010 introduction or lower.

The interesting thing I got from that interview is how he said that all of their lenses will be remodeled in new casings. Hmmm, that could explain the rebates on the 50mm right now.

A swell lens! Now I'm waiting for a 24/1.4 from the same mold. In fact, I'd be more than happy if Sigma had updated their entire 20/24/28 lens: make 24 an f/1.4 and keep the rest as f/1.8 while upgrading their optical performance and focus systems - 20 would be the extreme wide lens, and the 28 the affordable one of the bunch.
Come on Sigma, Nikon has released a 28/1.8 lens to great success (seemingly) so the bar has been raised; after all, fast wides are all the rage now!
YEs the 20/24/28 are in need of updates if for nothing else than to get HSM. They are old school slow ass AF motors and still use that horrible clutch mechanism for MF. Make the 24 f/1.4 for sure. The 20 doesn't really need to be faster than f/2. Make the 28 f/2 with OS

Yes. I'm hoping they update the 50/1.4 next! I'll be all over that.

They won't need to update the optics, that's for sure. IQ is superb. All they need is the better QC for AF and the new style body. The 50 did get an update after about a year to a newer finish which is much nicer. Of course it came out a few months after I bought mine.

I have no problems with IQ either, but found the AF to be inconsistent in the two copies I tried. I'm hoping the new version is as consistent with AF as the 35/1.4.

Yes. I'm really in a quandary now. I was willing to give up a stop of light, but a bit of sharpness too? I just don't know. The Canon seems to be priced a bit high for this level of performance. It will be interesting to see what both of these prices settle down to in a year or two.
Having another look, I think the Canon may hold it's own. When you compare the Canon f2 IS to the Sigma f1.4, both wide open, the Canon beats the Sigma in center and average resolution, but falls behind the Sigma in the corners. I think there is more to this story than what we have seen so far. I'd like to see some more testing at f 2.8 and smaller apertures.

You have to compare them at the same aperture. And look at both at f/2

Great job by Sigma. The Canon 35L is long in the tooth (1998) but still put up a good fight coming in a distant second. Whats really embarrassing is the performance from the Zeiss and Nikon which were designed in the last 2-3 years.

No I don't! I can do what I want!
Really, though, stopping down any lens 1 stop from wide open usually results in a significant improvement. Isn't that what we expect? Now if the Canon had surpassed the Sigma at f2, that really would have been quite exceptional.
