Have you done any comparisons with the 200mm micro? How does the Sigma stack up against it? I've owned several of the Sigma macros but never this one and they have all been great in the optics department.

Hard to see the difference. it's just to please my NAS . At one point i dumped 18-200 in favor of 16-85 and still regret it. only pixel peeping can show the diffenece between 18-200 and 16-85 in 24-85 range. Same with sigma and Nikon. for macro one needs to step it down for DOF and there is no difference at f8-f16. hope it helps

I think that because of the design required for 1:1 macros it's hard to screw up a macro lens. Over the years I've had several brands including Vivitar and they have all been great. Funny you mention that about stopping down only affects DOF, I was just explaining that in a thread over a POTN.

Anyhow, here's another friendly bump and GLWS, this is great for someone who mostly uses support for macro and doesn't want to drop the big bucks on the OS version.

Thanks for the support As per OS?VR versions:

1. Macro should NEVER be done with OS on - it will mess up the sharpness. Close-up can be done with OS on, but effectiveness of OS diminishes quickly at working distances shorter than 8 times of Focal Length.

2. OS should never be used on a tripod at any distance/lens - it will up mess up the sharpness (unless lens has tripod auto-detection feature)

2. ANY CURRNT generation of VR/OS/VC should be turned off for shutter speeds faster than 1/500 of seconds - at any distance/any focal length - you mess up the sharpness of the image (it has to do with the frequency of VR/OC/VC sampling the motion of the camera). You might get away without noticing the difference on 1/640, but pixel peeping on 1/1000s will show you that OS will reduce the sharpness, as OS will work ďwith delayĒ and possibly in totally in different direction than required just at that moment.

So folks, this lens is THE PERFECT MACRO LENS.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. If anyone pays today (and only today) Iíll drop the price to $520 including shipping and insurance. Iím not planning to drop the price at any time soon.
Best regards, Vlad
