p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Need your opinion about my D7K

I think that my D7K is not taking pics sharp enouugh.

I took many pics of my just bloomed orchid, with a 35 1.8, a 50-150 2.8 and a 100 2.8 macro.

Also I changed the F stops, from F4 all the way to F22, on a tripod and with shutter cable.

Personally I'm not really happy, I was expecting to be more sharp. What you guys think?

Thanks for C&C

Granted it's tough to judge, as the flower isnt crazy detailed, ...these arent 100% crops either i'm assuming...maybe upload something with more detail, and a full crop..

They are barely crop, and did not MF either.

I shoot in A mode, then converted the RAW files to Jpgs with LR4, retouching a little bit here and there.

There is a focus issue with some. A friend of mine sent hers back to Nikon when it was in warranty and they fixed it.

I don't think it is tack sharp.

I assume you've shot in manual and know it's sharp there? This is an autofocus problem right? How are you autofocusing?

Just work on one lens, say your 35mm, at f/2.8... shoot center point af, af-s mode, and always focus on the same spot at like 6 feet...take a bunch of shots, and see if any are front or back focused....then af fine tune if needed, and report back to us....

Looks pretty sharp to me. You can see the textures on the yellow leaf.

Note that the lighting situation is pretty harsh... that can cause perceived loss of contrast.

Hard to tell at the image sizes presented. A 100% crop would be useful. Keep in mind the resolution on any bayer sensor for those colors will be lower than more neutral or green content.

It is hard to say - as others have stated. Shoot with 100mm 2.8 and use a larger aperture for better bokeh - it should be sharp. Are you using LV? That will help as well

The 35mm shot is back focused on the plane of the green leaf.
The 85mm shot looks the same or worse.
The 100mm looks slightly back focused on the rear of the petals in the first shot.

100mm f/22 will always have some global contrast loss due to diffraction.

The lenses can all use a bit of negative AF tune on that body.

I tried to take some pics with the 100mm, shooting from F11 and up, but nothings has changed.
I went over the settings, did no found anything out of the ordinary. I think that the camera is the culprit.

Thanks guys for the comments and suggestion.

and to be clear, you are suspecting that your AF is having an issue?

or that your camera itself is not sharp somehow.

Because almost any photo that you see online that looks sharp has had sharpening applied in post processing.

Quick 'n dirty example - with a D7000, 50 1.8G wide open - before (straight out of camera), after (quick 'n dirty contrast, saturation, sharpen)

Hmm, this is a lot more dramatic on my pc rather than in small forum images

I'm a big fan of the D7000 but mine needed a fair amount of fine tuning to my lens collection, up to -20 on some copies.

What makes me wonder that no matter what lens I use, still no sharp enough.

In your pics, for me the first looks better than the second, but that is my opinion, which no necessary is the true.

Now I'm wonder how much will cost me to have the camera check for issues.

If my camera took pics like that I'd be looking to AF tune or send it in......since it's with all lenses I vote send it in for a calibration.

Focus mode used?

Was it windy?

By the way, if you're doing a flower with a tripod, live view/ manual focus might be a good idea.

AFS, Aperture priority, 11 points focus, tripod, shutting with cable (I was no touching the camera to shoot, only to focus, no wind at all.

Somebody has any idea the cost for calibration?

Yes, the cost of fine tuning your body to lenses = free and very simple to do yourself

If there really is a problem with the body beyond fine tuning's capability to fix, then you'll have to send it in for service. But yours looks very close already so I wouldn't worry.

I'm still not clear on if you are sure that the AF is the issue; your photos look pretty sharp especially the last couple, but it's hard to tell in small web pix. If you manually focus using live view on the tripod, are the photos then as sharp as you expect?

There are a bunch of threads on fine tuning, here's one example

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1152225/0

One last comment - for these types of photos (near macro to macro), I wouldn't be using AF anyway myself, I'd find it annoying
