p.1 #1 · Victoria Beach Transition to Winter

For some time I have wanted to shoot at Victoria Beach, MB as things start to freeze up and get covered in ice. With the recent snow and colder temps I decided to head out and see how things look. I was very happy with what I saw. Add to that I got an epic sunset with a light beam to work with. It was a short, freezing cold but very enjoyable shoot.

1. 1/500sec | f11 | 800mm | ISO 100 (Canon 100-400 with 2x extender)
2. 2.5sec | f/14 | 15mm | ISO 100 (2 exposures blended in to recover a little highlights and shadows)
3. 8sec | f8 | 235mm | ISO 100 (6 image stack for focus)
4. 0.5sec | f5.6 | 170mm | ISO 400

Hi Scott,

These are too cool. I love the huge sun in #1 and the moon in #4 sitting high in the sky over those brilliant reds and blues.

Really digging #2, 3 & 4!!! #2 has a nice contrast of warm sky and chilly foreground. #3 just says BBBrrrrrrrr!!! Funny, but when I look at #4 I don't see it as frozen scene in Manitoba. It reminds me of a beautiful tropical sunset, just add a few palm trees. Great set of shots!

I'm absolutely drooling over #3...that cool backlit archway against the warm sunset hues and with little icicles hanging down within the arch...the undulating layers of snow and ice in front of it, each getting some nice 'rim' light...just wonderful. The photo has a really strong sense of hierarchy, nice depth, and an unexpected sense of bravado in that inexplicable arch (what caused it, anyway??). One thing does have me scratching my head, though: what is causing that blurry zone in the second layer (just behind the foreground mound, and extending only about 4/5 of the way across the frame)?

Thank you Phrasikleia! That was a focus stack and I had let photoshop auto blend the image. I have now reworked it and blended the images manually.
