Wow, this has gotta be one of the coolest things I've ever seen. It really must have been incredible to watch. You really captured the moment too - what a fantastic set of shots! I love all of the swainson/bat shots but 11, 13 and 24 are my favorites.

Jim, these are remarkable! Truly one of nature's great spectacles that gets very little play because bats are generally unloved at best and reviled by most. I am pretty certain this forum has never seen anything like this and so thanks for sharing these! The critters on the way are pretty cool as well.
Some days I feel like I was around when those volcanic eruptions took place

Thank you Eric...I know their not popular, but I thought your profile said you were way into Big Bats

awesome photos! is this place open to the public? i think your last rattlesnake pic is a red diamondback, not a western diamondback.
Thanks BC. No, their is no public access, only escorted/guided tours. The snake is a Western, it's just the very colorful red sunset reflecting and giving it the hue (sunset light filtered through forest fire smoke is in play on several of these images)
Jim, what a wonderful and varied set. You've done a great job of reminding us that there is a lot to see everywhere and New Mexico is a great example. Very cool to see the oryx -- I saw a few 20 years ago in the White Sands area from a helicopter when we were headed out to retrieve a sounding rocket science payload we launched from the missile range. Quite a sight.

This is truly a great set of photos. The documentary is fantastic as well. It's stuff like this that keeps many of us going out with our cameras, hoping to find something that hasn't been overshot and oversold. Fantastic!
Thank you Wolfe, I most certainly agree with you on the lure of new and virgin photo ops....I'm always on the lookout for them.

Superb images James! I am a bird guy but to me, the sunset shot is my favorite in this series, I am a melodramatic bird guy Love the bat hunting as well, really excellent action shots. You are blessed to have these opportunities and thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the very generous comments.....I have a mellow side too - in between gnashing claws, tallons and fangs
