p.1 #1 · My backyard House Finch

So I finally started a backyard feeder in hopes of making songbird photography a bit easier. Sure, the birds I'll attract are going to be the typical finches, sparrows, etc.. but I'm kind of liking all the House Finches that have found my new backyard buffet. Here's a shot of one such House Finch on one of the perches I set up next to the tray feeder..

Thanks for leaving comments. I agree with you, Tim. The tail on this guy was cropped off even at full frame... I should have composed this better. I'm just getting started with my backyard birds.. composition and poses (and of course light!) are everything to make a halfway decent image from an ordinary songbird.

surfnron, thanks for the feedback. I am a natural light photographer, so flash photography is something I'm really green at. Early next spring I plan to move my setup to better natural "golden hour" light in my backyard and setting up a semi permanent blind to shoot from. This temporary setup I have on my deck is in poor light except for a few hours in the morning.

Thanks Birdie! I just started my backyard feeder a couple of weeks ago, and the house finches found it in just a few days. They are the primary regular visitor, both the males and females. I love the red on the male house finch. There is one in particular that visits that has a deeper red plumage than the others, which is kind of neat. Just the other day, saw my first dark eyed junco at my feeder tray (black oil sunflower seeds). It'll be interesting to see what other wintering birds I can attract (other than the house finch, house sparrow, and slate colored dark eyed junco)
