D40 for Beginner?

p.1 #1 · D40 for Beginner?

I'm looking for a cheap camera to loan to my daughter. I don't really know much about the lower end Nikons but I was looking at the D40 and saw a few for $200-$300. Any ideas, comments on the D40 or anything else I should consider?

For that money, may as well get the D70s. Same sensor, better metering and ergonomics.

How old is your daughter? What is her level of interest? Why loan it to her, instead of outright buying it for her?

D40 is a fine camera...yes the D70 is 'better' in many ways but it doesn't have the same beginner modes or as nice of a screen.

Or a D50 if you have AF-D lenses that won't autofocus on the D40

+1 D70s, here's one for $170. Add to that a 18-70 or one of your lenses and she's set to take photos

I spent almost 5 years with a D60 which might be an option for you as well. Great learning tool packing a lot of performance.

I love the colors of my GF's D40.

Excellent files, the CCD is awesome. And it's a very light and nice camera.

For $250 I would go for the D3000. It's the camera that got me into the hobby and everything about it was great. It also has a guide mode that I found very useful.

Out of all the lower end cameras I had (D40, D50, D60, D3000, D3100, D3200) I found the D40 to be the best and favorite of the bunch.

You can't go wrong with it.

I would suggest D200. You can get one around 200-300 range. It will be a better camera in the long run and I love the color produced by it.

I still keeping my D40 today, it is my first DSLR and I am planning on keeping it.

like the beegees this thread is staying alive.
but ahh yes i loved my d40 which started my kick into photo. in fact a lot of my favorite shots were with it and i have a few printed on my wall. also good ideas to check out other older models where you can a lot more camera to grow into for the money..g ood luck
