There are very few places in England where you can see thenative Red Squirrel (they are present in greater numbers in northern Scotland) The only rwo places I know of are Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour and the Isle of Wight, where grey squirrel incursions can be eliminated. Last Friday I visited the Isle of Wight on business and took my camera to Parkhurst Woods, where there is a red squirrel hide. I missed the hide on the walk in as it was hidden by the trees and ended up at a house where I intended to ask directions. As I walked up to the gate I observed a red squirrel in the garden and started to photograph, when the house owner appeared. He informed that I stood little chance of seeing any from the hide and then invited me into his back garden, where he and his wife had squirrel feeders set up. The reds were still some distance away and rather shy but I spent a happy hour photographing them before I had to leave for my meeting!
