Got to shoot this game at one of the better high school venues with great lighting last night. 1DMark4 with the 300/2.8, ss varied from 500 to 640. It was fun to shoot at ISO 5000 and not worry about flash and redeye.
IMHO you have the best flashed shots of anyone around in terms of flash/ambient balance. Well, the action is great, too!
I gotta ask - do you underexpose ambient by, say, 1-1.5 stops and just accept that some shots will have ghosting, but there will be keepers where 1/250 was enough; that is, the face is sharp?
You got it right by being 1 - 1.5 stops under ambient, flash is on ETTL. When there is ghosting, I try and play with the ISO to avoid that effect. I always shoot ss@250 no matter what the ISO is. In this stadium, I should've shot at ISO 640 instead of 800 to avoid the ghosting. I just shot these few flashed shots and dialed in 800 out of habit as it is what I start with. I never go over ISO 1000 when using flash except when using HSS.
I shot these at ISO 5000 with HSS because I knew that I would get good results with the Mark4 but not with my other 1D bodies.
From a game I shot about 4 weeks ago with ISO 5000, HSS, SS@1000, flash on ETTL.
This high school is one of the newer ones in our area. Six light standards with each standard having a bank of 20 lights. Even the end zone is nicely lit. I guess someone thought about us photographers.
