Photo by the NPS showing the breach at the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge West Pond dam
The breach is reported to be 50' across and the Refuge is closed to visitors. We call the location of the breach “The Runway” as it is the place where birds fly in and out of the West Pond and a wonderful place to take flight photos of the hundreds of thousands of migratory birds that pass through the Atlantic Flyway and use JBWR as a resting spot before crossing New York Harbor to New Jersey. What was a fresh water pond is now salt water and the birds will need to find drinking water someplace else.
I'm a big fan of your blur in flight images...mine come out that way when I screw up the shutter speed ...the last is so sweet and great light as well.
There certainly will need to be some changes in behavior of the local avian and land based community as a result of the devastation....but nature does have a way of sorting these things out....different but effective in the end.
