| p.1 #1 · JBWR West Pond Breach |
The earth I stood to take these photos is gone, removed by Hurricane Sandy and replaced by a breach in the dam that formed the West Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge hear in New York City.
My photos were all taken October 13, 2012 and exif data is available if you are interested.
I found out about the situation from the NPS Face Book page where they are posting updates on the Gateway NP situation post Sandy.

The breach is reported to be 50' across and the Refuge is closed to visitors. We call the location of the breach “The Runway” as it is the place where birds fly in and out of the West Pond and a wonderful place to take flight photos of the hundreds of thousands of migratory birds that pass through the Atlantic Flyway and use JBWR as a resting spot before crossing New York Harbor to New Jersey. What was a fresh water pond is now salt water and the birds will need to find drinking water someplace else.
This image shows the trail as it was when I visited in May of 2004.
The Statue of Liberty and Fire Island took also took a beating.
