Just got finished with a two-day shoot at Quivira NWR (central KS). The whooping crane put on a wonderful show for us in-flight. On Thursday morning, we had 3 whoopers lift-off from a mud flat around 10:30am and flew right over us for some nice images. Then today, there were 18 whoopers congregated at the Little Salt Marsh and the ALL took off at the same time shortly before 10am, heading south (not sure for good or to feed... there's a stiff south wind today immediately south of the refuge). At any rate, a rare high number of them were in flight close together providing for a very unique image of 16 whoopers in the same frame in flight including 2 rust-colored juveniles and one adult that had a tracking unit attached to one of its legs.
