p.1 #1 · Canon 5D3 Kit or Body Only?

I'm moving up from my 50D to a 5D3. I own a 70-200 2.8 IS and all my other lens are EFS. Should I purchase the kit that comes with the 24-105 F4 IS ($800 more) or body only and spend the money ($2,300) for the 24-70 2.8 (No IS)?

The answer to your question kind of depends on your uses for the lens(es).

I find the 24-70 f/2.8 to be too bulky/heavy to function as my walking-around lens; I love my 24-105 f/4L.

If I felt I needed to use a 24-70 f/2.8 frequently, I probably would have only that. As it is (I'm an avid hobbyist; I don't do portraits), my 24-105 f/4L lives on my 5D3, and my 28-70 f/2.8L lives in my bag, rarely getting used.

Given the good deal on the kit lens, and the used market price of about $800, there is little risk in getting the kit; sell the lens (for what you paid for it) if you don't like it.

Well it's a tough decision which would be best answered depending on your intended usage. I own the 24-105L and while I think it's very good lens it can't compete against the 24-70L II on IQ. However, IS and the extra 35mm make it a far more useful travel lens if that's important. This is why I was disappointed they announced new 24-70 f/4 rather than update the 24-105.

I own the 24-70mm f/2.8 II and its a great lens. That said I would spend my money on the 24-105mm f/4 IS and then a great fast prime like the 50mm f/1.2 or the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 for about the same price unless you already own some of these primes. Tailor the prime to what you like to shoot most, lamscape, walkaround, portraits, A 135mm f/2.0L is also a great lens for portraits and don't forge the 100mm f/2.8 Macro. Choose fast like f/1.4 or special purpose for a specific type of effect.

After reading Starnut's reply I might just buy the 6D kit for Christmas. He's right. There's no downside. I may even enjoy having a slow lens around. I might be a good partner for my 100-400.

Seems that you've already made your mind up, congrats on the new camera! For a future buy you may want to consider the new 24-70 f/4 IS as it sounds like it may be a nice lens to add to your kit!

Can't beat the 24-105 when purchased as a kit. I agree, add a fast prime to compliment it if you need faster aperture.
