p.1 #1 · Best LCD / Live-view for Alt. Glass

I preffice this by saying I listed this on The Canon Forum and it was suggested I ask here since you actually use Alt. (Zeiss) glass.. Primarily which LCD monitor do you prefer??
I just purchased a Zeiss 35 F2 lens and was trying it out today on my 1DsII... I do not have live-view, and the LCD screen is antiquated... I had about a 10% keeper rate (out of focus)... Tried my wife's 7D with live view and keepers rose to about 90%... Now I need a camera with live-view... My wife told me to buy the 5DIII but honestly I do not want to spend that much... I see you can still purchase a new 5DII at Amazon, and other places... Hence, the question, Does the 5DII have as good an LCD monitor / live-view as the 7D ?? Thanks, Jim

Let me get this straight.Your wife told you to buy the 5DIII and its not in your home yet? That is a switch.

With the lens that you have the 5DII is an excellent choice.A NEX 7 or 5N would also be a nice choice for other alt glass but the ZE glass makes it more of a challenge. You would need to buy a costly adapter to be able to control aperture on it.

Really you can trust the 5DmkII's live view, it's hardly different from the 7D's LCD. More important, the 7D might have a slightly better LCD colour representation, but the 5DmkII has the sensor that I would like to have for the 35 Zeiss. That is a huge difference. So if you need a camera now, go for the 5DmkII. If you can shoot with your wife's 7D in the meantime you could also wait for the new 6D that will be available soon.

When I worked, I spent freely... But since retirement I have adapted... I just personally feel the 5DIII is overpriced... My intent is to borrow the wife's camera as often as possible, but she normally is out shooting with me... Thanks for the info... Jim

Thanks for the feedback... Not sure about the 6D as I normally wait to let the kinks get worked out... I am actually holding out for the high MPix D800 competitor... Until then it will probably be the 5DII...I do not have to have the camera now, but before Jan. 1, 2013... We are taking off for a one / two year RV trip around the USA & Canada...

In the 5D2 you will also be able to install Magic Lantern that gives a bunch of helpful functions for precise focusing in various conditions or shooting situations. It comes with a bag of other stuff too.

And if you like the OVF in fast situations it supports the fast matte EG-S, a support most oddly given up in the 5D3. Came back in the 6D (!).

Bad part, still not titlable screen since Canon has not yet realized how many that would appreciate that so we need to wait a generation or two for that anyway. As we will for some *real* sensor improvement.

Didn't the price of the 5DIII just drop to D800-levels? Do you really need 36+MP? I have a D800, but if it came in a 24MP version, I would prefer that. The D600 is too consumerish for me though...

5DMK2 or 1DsMK3 might be nice solution. Migrating to Sony too (but as its no turning back, not sure.. you should probably try before buy, rent yourself A77 or so.. ).

Sony isnt that easy to adapt as Canon, but LV with focus peaking and magnification and in pretty big and detailed EVF makes manual focus much easier (and pretty comfortable).

I would not wait for two generations for that, actually I believe the coming 6D solves this issue by offering a WiFi connection that enables your smartphone or tablet to be used for applications where a tiltable screen otherwise would be desirable. If wireless isn't necessary and you can live with a wired solution, DSLR controller is already available for many of the current DSLR, amongst them the 5DmkII. Have a look at how it works at

I use this solution for my 1DsmkIII and a Galaxy S2 and a Galaxy 10.1 Tab and am very satisfied. I find it especially useful for shooting with my TS/E lenses.

I will have to do research on Magic Lantern as I am not familiar.. Tilt is not a major concern although the older I get the better it sounds... Thank you

I believe you are correct on the price drop... I do not "Need" 36mp but would "like" to have them... I have so much invested in Canon I do not believe I will ever change brands... Thank you

I could go for a 1DsIII if I could afford one... Currently the prices are about $500 - $750 over my budget... Can not leave Canon as I have too much invested... Thank you...

Live View on the 5d2 is spot on.

Your only problem will be that you won't have any excuse for any less than a 100% keeper rate (based on focusing accuracy alone). The viewfinder is not bad either with the Eg-S, but certainly not great and not as good as the pro bodies such as 1ds2.

I agree with this camera assessment above. You will find better image quality with the 5DII, especially at higher ISOs.

I responded to your other thread on DPR comparing the 5DII Vs 7D LCDs. I did want to add this link since you are now on the FM forums.

While an external monitor may not be in your budget, the large size and HD quality of the display along with the embeded software features of the DP6 really enhance the manual focus accuracy. I have 3 Zeiss ZE lenses along with the Canon 17 & 24II TSE, all manual focus. This external monitor is really a help with the tilt / focus adjustment.

Mike; Thank you for the link... I have the DP6 noted as a possible solution, but have not had time to research... This will work on the 1DsII?? Thanks, Jim
