Just getting around to posting a set from Friday night. The Hopewell Vikings (white) somehow managed to make the playoffs with a 4-5 record. They had to travel to Hampton to take on a Talbot team that was 7-2 and just missed out on winning its conference championship. Hampton (in blue) was heavily favored. Guess that's why they play the game. After a scoreless first half, Hopewell scored twice in the third quarter and hung on for the 14-6 upset.
Really like #2 for its patterns and colors & that 'peekaboo in the funhouse' effect. Also #9, I appreciate the direction of light, how it throws the name & number into relief & gives texture cues, and highlights the hand in the face mask. Ouch
rrxjon -- thanks for taking time to check out the set . I really liked the symmetry and sparkle of number 2 -- and thought number 9 showed a big, highly-motivated running back who was not going to be tackled. The big guy ran for 157 yards on the night.
Yup....nicey...nicey Rick. Colors are rockin and the girls are sporting some pretty nice uni's. Nice timing on #11 and good planning on your part being in the right spot for the final tick to get the kids and scoreboard in the BG.
Rick - Nice pregame shots, they really jump off the page and have great emotion. echo Franks comments on the colors and timing as well throughout the game. You seem to have captured both sides of the ball well and the reactions at the end.
#6 was a great grab with what looks like a strip/fumble.

Hi Frank,
Really liked the pregame shots of the cheerleaders and dance team, but I have to admit that when I tripped the shutter in #11 I didn't think much if it, but when I looked more closely, I liked how the ball was obviously fluttering out of his hand and my ribs hurt. And the scoreboard shot is one I hunted all year long. Finally found it. As my buddy Marty Bingham says "Even a blind hog finds an acorn every once in a while."

cool set!
Manny,
I appreciate your feedback. If you agree with Frank, you must have a great eye because he is a legend in my book.
Makes me happy that you liked number 6. When the play happened, the ball was stripped out of the running back's hands by number #52, and blue recovered. However, the officials ruled the runner's knee was down. I doubted them until I took a look at my own personal instant replay -- and dang it if they didn't get it right on the money.
And your high ISO shots with the "old" D300 are very impressive! Any NR?
Thanks Dennis. I don't know what it is about the D300, but I am constantly amazed at how good shots can be out of that old workhorse. I'm not doing anything really unusual or special. Shoot it in RAW. Glass is a great copy of the Nikon 70-200 VRI (with VR off) shot wide open. I tend to favor Auto ISO on the D300 and let it rip. Minimum shutter speed of 1/640th with Auto ISO and Aperture Priority. All my post-processing is done in Lightroom 3.6 (haven't even upgraded to 4.0+ yet.) Slight tweaks to exposure, fill light, recovery, vibrance and saturation as needed. THen it's a bump of Noise Reduction (but never more than 25 on the slider) and finally a touch of sharpening on the way out in the Export process.
I carry the 300 with the 70-200 as my sideline/goal-line unit for when the action is just too close for the D3 with the prime telephoto. Seems to work.

These are great. Frank said what I was going to say...great colors, low noise... Really clean. I wish my 1d3 went to 12800
Jeff,
Maybe it's time to see if we can recruit you over to the Dark Side?!?! But then again, based on the last set you just posted from Division 3 football, you had some really good stuff. Certainly nothing to sneeze at.
I can't tell you how happy I have been since making the jump from a crop sensor to the full frame body. Color, noise, sharpness -- all of it -- just took a huge jump in my opinion when I moved up earlier this fall. I never thought I would be able to shoot the D3 at 12,800 but I do every single weekend. Not sure if it is a testimony to the camera or the Noise Reduction built in to Lightroom, but it is remarkable how clean the combination is. Glad you like them.

looking good Rick, also echo Frank's comments.

I always knew you to be a man of few words. Always good to know that they have received the Aqualung Seal of Approval.

Nice shots all round, but #2 is a real winner for me. More of a "people" shot than sports per se, but magical...
I'm glad you like that shot. It is one of my personal favorites of "the game inside the game" from this fall. I sure appreciate you taking time to comment.

Great set, Rick. That umbrella shot is awesome! But the real key is that your enthusiasm shines through the entire post. Thanks for sharing.
Morning Russ,
I'm not sucking up, but you have a lot to do with that umbrella shot. Your submissions always have one, two or three images showing the action that has nothing to do with a blitzing linebacker or a flanker screen. You and others have taught me to watch the ENTIRE game -- not just the action that happens between the lines.
For what it's worth, I LOVE the umbrella shot, too.
These are excellent, great moments captured. #2 is indeed killer Timing of #6 is perfect. Since you asked for C&C, #8 didn't draw me in as much as the others because of the wider framing, giving a slightly less you-are-there feeling.
