I guess Canon has decided to show them all that they are still the innovation and new technology top dog. This kind of engineering triumph probably helps Canon soothe their wounds inflicted upon them by D800.

) would be very expensive, probably close to $50 ea.
These pinchers will go for something like $10.

All Canon lenses from January 2013 will get the new lens caps, so better sell your lenses with the Mk I caps now before the value drop! Buyers won't ask for the lens date code, they will be asking which version lens caps come with the lens!

Canon has also introduced a new design of lens cap that includes a center-pinch mechanism for easier handling with lens hoods in place. Other brands have been offering this type of cap for years, but at least Canon has finally caught up. The new caps will eventually be supplied with all new Canon lenses, starting from January 2013.

Maybe they can sell T-shirts too, like "I paid $2000.00 for a piece of junk lens and all I got was this stupid cap."

Then again I wonder if the old lens caps will eventually become collectors' items since they are no longer going to be produced.

I bet on the B&S forum people will be asking whether the lens is BNC version ie before new cap.

Canon will add them to the next round of rebates, you buy two new cap, and get a free Pixma printer! You can sell the printer and it works out to be much cheaper then buying the caps separately!

They will also add them to the loyalty program, you can trade in your old worn out caps for a refurbished Mk II cap at a discounted price!

Actually, there are some old Canon caps which are rather difficult to get today in a nice condition. They have the same raised lettering "Canon" on them, but not silvered, i.e., the entire cap is black.
The old classics such as the Pipe, 50 f/1.0 and 135 SF came with such caps. Then, sometime in early to mid nineties, Canon introduced the silver lettering on their caps as well as "ultrasonic" addition (where it applied).
