I am looking for a small bag for carrying my 7D+100-400L (same size as 70-200 2.8) when I am shooting wildlife/bird. I am currently using my Lowepro Fastpack 300 but I found it too big for that occasion...any advises?

It'll fit nicely in a LowePro TopLoader Pro 75, even with a grip on the body.

I sometimes use the TL75 with a 1D-series body and 70-200/2.8L IS II, or 100-400L lens, with hood reversed. Mine is an older style than the current version (link below). The rectangular front pockets on mine look larger/thicker than the current model; the large pocket on top fits a 580EX flash, and the smaller one at the bottom easily takes one LP-E4 battery (1D...) or at least two 7D/5DII batteries. I don't know what you can stuff into the outer pockets of the new TL75.

I never thought about Toploader stuff...That would not work for me as I prefer backpack. Thank you though

You're welcome. Maybe you could drop into a local REI and see what they might have. I usually prefer to use "non-photo" photo bags.

I'm biased, as I work for Think Tank Photo, but I do use this (well, it's a D7000 + 70 - 200 f/2.8 VRII) combination frequently when hiking about or shooting concerts.

http://www.thinktankphoto.com/products/digital-holster-30-v2.aspx

That's about as camera/lens conforming as it gets, and it works great with the 100 - 400 (we have a ton of Canon gear here).

It can be used in a number of ways - attached to a camera belt (http://www.thinktankphoto.com/categories/camera-belts.aspx), worn as a shoulder bag, attached to the front of one of our backpacks or used as a chest-pouch when used in conjunction with the Digital Holster Harness - http://www.thinktankphoto.com/products/digital-holster-harness-v2.aspx

Personally I use it on the belt when hiking or as a shoulder bag when just wandering around town or shooting concerts. The nice thing about using it on the belt is that I can add/remove capacity as needed. We have pouches for extra lenses, strobes, filters and a water holder, etc.

Hope you don't mind the plug, but it seemed fitting in this case.

Kind regards,

Randy

For carrying just the camera and one lens (including the 100-400), I use the digital holster that Randy above recommends. It's great.

What would a different backpack give you over the fastpack 300? There's a lot of options out there...depends what feature(s) you are looking for.

I also use the think tank digital holster, but I have v40. It allows me to can 7D with 24-70, or unzipped I can carry 70-200 with 1.4
