So $1,500 for the lens on its own, so I would guess it will add $1,200 to the price of the 6D. That will make the kit substantially more than the Nikon D600 plus 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 VR. To me that doesn't bode well for sales, but we will just have to wait and see. I think this means pragmatically that in a year a used 24-70 f/4L IS will go for about $1,000 or so compared to about $700 for a 24-105 f/4L IS. If this lens has clearly better performance, I might well pay the premium, but again we will have to wait to see how good it is.

I'd be much more interested in a 28-105/2.8L IS. That would replace most of my kit.

$1500 lens to use as a 6D kit because the $1200 one wasnt expensive enough for a $2000 camera. Jeez.

Wow, $2200-2499 5d2 24-105L4 kit vs $3500 6d 24-70L4 kit vs $4300 5d3 24-105L4 kit = same IQ now, we are blessed

It's pretty boring here in Simi -- not many interesting gardens or parks (most parks are for local sports).

Hopefully the reason is to have a lower priced option. My guess is this new lens is mainly designed to compete price wise with the new Nikon 24-85. Not sure why Canon didn't just update their non-L 24-85 instead though.

Uh, cuz it was pretty awful?

But I agree, the wider zoom range is attractive. Nikon has tried and failed since the film days to put a 24-85-120 together with great imaging. It seems not so easy to make a high quality lens beyond 24-70.

Some folks mentioned we should not be converting these Japanese Yen prices to USD. So, what I did instead was visit BCNRanking, look at items with similar Yen prices and checked out the equivalent US pricing.

It turns out the 24-70 f/4L IS is priced slightly higher than the 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS lens and the 35 f/2 IS is close in price to the EF-S 10-22 lens. So, the expected prices for 24-70 f/4L IS and 35 f/2 IS are US$1600 and US$850 respectively. However, it's hard to tell how much Canon will charge when it's sold as a kit lens
...Show more

So, my method of guessing the price in USD is nearly spot on.

I wish that Canon had built a really great 24-105 IS L II instead.

I'm happy with my 24-105 4L but some find it too bulky and the 24-70 may hit the sweet spot for travelers. I suspect the USD price will be considerably less than $1800 come spring or summer.

As for the 4-stop hybrid IS, well that's been around for a while. The ancient 2009 EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM has 4-stop auto detect standard and panning IS. And, yep, I really can squeeze any extra stop out of it over my other normal zooms.

So the kit would be something around $ 3200 with 6D, I guess.
Looks like a nice combo with either 70-200 4.0 or 70-300 L and 5D III/6D (/7D/60D) to me.

Some sample images and a hands on test could be nice now.

You bring up some interesting points. I have a question for you... If all you need to do with your camera is to post vacation shots on facebook, then why use an expensive FF in the first place? Either an entry level APS-C camera, or the lightweight weather-sealed Olympus OMD + 12-50 lens (equivalent to 24-100 mm on FF), or the Sony RX100 will suffice. Why splurge on heavy and expensive FF gear?

If we're talking about a person who is now deciding on a camera system, yes, mirrorless is the way to go, in my opinion.

But I was referring to all those photographers who already own a dslr system (which they use for more purposes, not just vacation) (such as myself and manyyyy others).

Yes, you're right. The 15-85 merely has auto detect for normal IS and panning IS so I assumed that mean it sported hybrid abilities (I must to flip a switch on my other IS lens to enable panning). Canon uses hybrid IS to include the countering of additional movements like swaying...

+1000

After reading the review on how useless the macro mode is on the 24-70 f/4 it's now even less desirable.

Indeed, it appears that Canon is smoking crack. It looks like I will continue to use 3rd party lenses, Canon seems unable to release anything for less than 800 dollars.

$850 for a non-L 35mm lens

pretty harsh if you don't wanna use the 30 year old model, jeez

this i expected. but the price of that zoom is absolutely absurd.

The current 24-105 is actually very good. However, I wouldn't mind a bit if they updated it to:

- improve the barrel distortion and vignetting at the wide end a bit.
- control the zoom creep that inevitably develops over time

I can't imagine why I would want the 24-70 f/4 L IS in place of the current 24-105, though I can perhaps imagine wanting a 24-105 with such improvements.

Both lenses are listed in the Canon feedback/support forum now. My suggestion is to let them know your opinion on their pricing "strategy", especially with regard to the huge cost difference to roughly comparable Nikon equipment (e.g., D600/24-85 versus 6D/24-70). Can't hurt, and might even help a bit (witness the 5Diii eBay sales).

That sounds like a pretty good statement of reaction to the new lens.

Thakfully, I am not going to give them a penny towards 24-70L f/2.8 II or 24-70 f/4, although I would be interested in the faster zoom at its current price only if it came with IS, and only if the barrel components were made of metal, exibiting quality workmanship commensurate to the price.

My comment was really about Canon making more of a mid-quality, non-L lens, like the 24-85 was, rather than the longer zoom range. My 24-85 actually fine on an APS-C camera , and I loved the light weight.
