Its a near macro with hybrid IS. The $1300 price tag is going to make it more expensive than the 24-105L. It better be sharper as well.

Price seems to be fluctuating. I thought it was $1800?

A friend of mine asked me why did Canon do the 24-70 4 IS when they have the 24-105? I scratch my head and da I don't know does Canon? Doesn't make much sense to me. Anyone have any idea at all?

Mike

Canon made the 24-70 f4L IS, a lens no one can understand, to pair with the 6D, a camera no one can understand.

Smaller, lighter, better IQ, I would hope. At the right price point, I may choose it over the 24-105. Since the 24-70 is new, it may also have better AF.

24-105 ain't all that big. It has excellent IQ. AF works fine. Focal length range is larger. Cost is competitive. ;-)

It would be insane of Canon to drop the 24-105 f4L. It is one of their best selling lenses and one of the few points left of differentiation with Nikon where Canon are still ahead. However, being unpredictable and dissappointing is a hallmark of Canon decision making of late.

I wanted the 35 f2 to be updated with USM but the hefty price increase that accompanied the 24/28 updates will put me off. I am fast going to M4/3 where reasonably priced high quality primes are the norm and IS is built into the body making all this expensive lens based IS unnecessary.

..... Um.... Ok. Who asked for these? Canon seriously you guys on crack? Seriously? Who is going to buy these? Especially at those prices..... They will need to be sharper than all predecessors by a noticeable step

The accounting department no doubt. They see a lens (24-105mm) which sells in huge volumes and hatch a plan to sell it again with a new name and price to double-up on the revenue. I actually like the concept of a 24-70 f/4 IS - the price will determine how much I like it though.

Unless this 24-70 is just leaps and bounds better than the 24-105, I just don't get this. Nice to see an update to the 35, though.

relative to the new 24/2.8IS and 28/2.8IS that's pretty reasonable. I'll probably go for a 24-105 and 35/2IS instead of an f/4 standard zoom for $1500

There's a glut of 24-105s. Canon's own refurbs regularly go for under $700. My copy, since it was calibrated by Canon, is a cracker of a lens. The IS system is good for over three stops and I've no complaints about AF accuracy. I don't know what they could improve.

Less distortion and improved corner sharpness at the wide end, plus an extra stop of image stabilization would be bonuses for me.

The price is not that surprising given Canon's other recent offerings. The 24-70 f4L IS offer less reach than the 24-105 f4L IS but Canon are throwing in reasonable macro performance. Not that surprising that Canon are asking another $500 for that given how expensive a brand they are becoming.

Seriously though who can afford this stuff? A few years ago an enthusiast would buy an Elan 7 and a 24-85 for about $500 and be good to go. Now they are asking $3700 for a 6D with a 24-70 f4? What is driving this market?

I strongly doubt you'd see an extra stop of stabilization. The 24-105 is leaps and bounds ahead of my 28-135 and right up there with the 70-200/4L IS. In my own use, it's a four-stop lens. Same thing with the corners. It's fine in the corners if the optics aren't decentered. Distortion is a checkbox in ACR, I don't even consider it.

The new lens does appear to have significantly higher magnification, though. 0.70X relative the 0.23X on the 24-105. That's worth something.

As I previously noted, I find the 24-70 f/4 IS to be completely unattractive at that price. \

But I feel that comparing an "Elan 7 and a 24-85" with a 6D +24-70 IS to be absurd. One can still get an entry-level Canon DSLR (and much better than an Elan 7) and kit zoom for not much over US$500; just not a full frame offering with a Canon L lens. Not surprisingly....

You just said it was three stops... Arrgh. Anyways the new one has 4-stop hybrid IS, so yes slightly more advanced than the seven year old 24-105L.

Lenstip.com actually found 3.5-3.6EV with their copy. I'd wager it's down to who's holding the camera body, but I wouldn't expect any practical difference except at macro distances the 24-105 can't shoot anyway.

OK I admit it, twice the price I thought it should be.

$1500 lens to use as a 6D kit because the $1200 one wasnt expensive enough for a $2000 camera. Jeez.
