Sounds like a good plan Ralph, beer it is, come out here during our summer months and there be pijuns galore to shoot; the two legged bikini clad type, I'll have to introduce you to the Belmont Brewery and their Strawberry Blonde, it's a mighty fine brewski, a 20 ouncer should get us started

Jerry, I am an old man now ... two to three bottles are turning my mind about 180 degrees. After I might be dreaming of a 50 L again ...

Jerry, 40D is an all around very good camera.

I agree. In fact, a few months ago I mentioned that I liked my 40D better than the 7D that I bought to replace it. Man, that didn't go over very well.

Okay so I wait things out and by end of 2013/14, given we survive the Mayan calender thingy, my kit is kinda like this...

- used/referbed 6D or 5D3, 40D as my backup, all gripped
- 17-40 f4L, 24-70 f4L IS, 70-200 f4L IS
- 28 f1.8, 50 f1.4, 85 f1.8
- 100 f2.8L IS, 300 f4L IS, 400 f5.6L IS
- 12/25mm ext tubes, 1.4x II or III T/C
- plus my flash stuff

Sounds like a sound setup to me...Oops forgot about refreshment/nutrition, bag of limes, sea salt, bottle of Herradura Seleccion Suprema Tequila and shot glassess

Here is my kid wish, Jerry:
- 6D or 5D III (with 6d as my favorite if IQ keeps next to 5D III), of course with grip
- 24-70 L IS & 70-200 L IS, both 4.0 (if the new 24-70 fits IQ)
- no further lens (I do not shoot macro)
- my reflector set
- my speedlight 430 EX II (for some stupid jobs shots)
- much freedom to rent any lens for additional jobs (or even pleasure), if necessary
- lot of time and much money saved for travelling

- visiting you and having a beer
- visiting Peter and having another one -

:-) I am in too, Jim! But lets not talk about photography. That is what we can do here at Fred`s

I'm afraid for me major traveling is not in the picture, being wheelchair bound I'm kinda limited in my mobility. But we do have quite the sites to shoot here in SoCal, perhaps we could gather down south of me and join Fred for a day or two enjoying the San Clemente area, nice beaches, a beautiful pier, rugged coastline, nice wine n dine small town eateries...and some fine looking birds Perhaps we could entice Fred into a bit of his Tilt n Shift trickery as well!

Sounds good! San Clemente, here we come. (Can you hear the Beverly Hillbillies theme?)

Of course for Fred, it would be just dead boring in his own backyard!

It would be fun to get a few people together sometime in sunny SoCal.

Why doesn't Canon put IS in the 24-70 f/2.8, keep the 24-105mm f/4 IS and be done with it?

Hopefully the reason is to have a lower priced option. My guess is this new lens is mainly designed to compete price wise with the new Nikon 24-85. Not sure why Canon didn't just update their non-L 24-85 instead though.

Aren't you guys tired of changing lenses? (I'm not being ironic and i'm referring to the fact that when you travel / work with many lenses you have to keep changing them back & forth from the body).

When you're coming back from a vacation or holiday or whatever, it's not like you're gonna need 20mp files sharp & crisp for the pixel peepers..... No,you're gonna come back with some nice pictures which you are gonna resize & then post to facebook, forums, web or whatever. You're not gonna make huge monster prints...

SO........why spend money on owning redundant lens combos ?

You bring up some interesting points. I have a question for you... If all you need to do with your camera is to post vacation shots on facebook, then why use an expensive FF in the first place? Either an entry level APS-C camera, or the lightweight weather-sealed Olympus OMD + 12-50 lens (equivalent to 24-100 mm on FF), or the Sony RX100 will suffice. Why splurge on heavy and expensive FF gear?

A friend of mine asked me why did Canon do the 24-70 4 IS when they have the 24-105? I scratch my head and da I don't know does Canon? Doesn't make much sense to me. Anyone have any idea at all?

Smaller, lighter, better IQ, I would hope. At the right price point, I may choose it over the 24-105. Since the 24-70 is new, it may also have better AF.

Maybe less distortion and better corner to corner sharpness a'la the 24-70 2.8L II. Never know, but I hope the cost is low and IQ high! Not that I will get one.. I don't need two 24-70s

If Canon's intention is to compete price wise against the Nikon 24-85 f/3.5-4.5, they would not have taken the trouble to weather-seal their 24-70 f/4 lens, introduced IS and slapped on the L moniker. No, I'm afraid the 24-70 f/4L IS lens is going to be expensive.

Some folks mentioned we should not be converting these Japanese Yen prices to USD. So, what I did instead was visit BCNRanking, look at items with similar Yen prices and checked out the equivalent US pricing.

It turns out the 24-70 f/4L IS is priced slightly higher than the 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS lens and the 35 f/2 IS is close in price to the EF-S 10-22 lens. So, the expected prices for 24-70 f/4L IS and 35 f/2 IS are US$1600 and US$850 respectively. However, it's hard to tell how much Canon will charge when it's sold as a kit lens with the 6D.

IMo it is to provide a ~500-600 kit lens option for the 6d. Or it damned well should be.

Hopefully it's better optically. But I can see how it could be worth it by simply being smaller, lighter, and cheaper.

Its a near macro with hybrid IS. The $1300 price tag is going to make it more expensive than the 24-105L. It better be sharper as well.

It has hybrid IS?!? Awesome for video. That is what the 6D is aimed at.

Not sure why everyone is freaking out because there's already a 24-105/4 IS out there. Last time I checked there were lots of version II lenses.

Perplexingly bizarre IMO. Why not just update the 24-105L with similar features?

It'll probably turn out to be a stupendously good lens, but it would prove less flexible for travel than the 24-105L. That extra 35mm makes it far more useful to me than the a 24-70 for travel. Maybe the macro will make up for this.

Of course maybe 24-105L will continue on and might get a normal update one day, but Canon are just as likely to drop it as update it.

A nice compromise would have been a 24-85 f/4L HIS
