p.1 #1 · First Football: CU-Stanford

Gave football a try this weekend; 7D with 200 f/4 IS. Would love some C&C (if it's worth it .

Oh, and Stanford routed the Buffs

I must have walked by you a couple times at least. I was on the sidelines shooting the game. I will post photos later today. After 3 days and 4 football games I am wiped out.

I'm guessing you weren't credentialed and shooting from the sidelines? No offense, from a sports action standpoint these just aren't working for me. Here's why:

#1 - Nothing going on at all; looks like random warm up by the kickers and snappers. I was a long snapper, so I like those guys but they don't make for many compelling images, especially not when they're not even doing anything!

#2 - QB isn't in focus and the action with the lineman isn't very compelling.

#3 - No face, no ball, action going away.

#4 - Timing is okay on this one, but the action is out of focus and there's just too much "stuff" in the foreground.

#5 - Your best shot!! Looks like you had the right angle with this one. Even the red stuff in the foreground isn't a deal breaker.

I don't mean to beat you up, but if you were shooting from the stands you're sort of behind the eight ball to begin with. And if you're shooting from down low that makes it even more difficult. I shoot from the stands now and then, but it's from a much higher angle that helps eliminate the distractions like you have in #4.

Keep shooting and keep posting.

Thanks for the comments Scott--those are very constructive and I don't feel beat up. Comments/criticism is what I was after.

I was in the stands/uncredentialed...and am usually behind the 8 ball anyways

Re #2: I was trying to show that the QB had trouble coming around the blind side. I think it would have been better if the QB had been more OOF with less DOF. He got drilled on that play but I didn't have a good angle on the sack.

Re #3: Those are great comments "no face, no ball, going away." Will remember that. Would have loved more separation/shallower DOF...on the plus side he's floating?

Re #4: Was trying to show "all eyes" on the play...on second look agree it's too busy and too far away. Here's another try. I don't see out of focus but my f4 can be a tad soft at the long end (full size available here):

Thanks again Scott for taking the time to give some advice
