Years ago- for want of a zoom. Sigh.
Quarter horses are bred for sprinting, i.e. 1/4 mile straight line racing.
Very popular in real life (especially in real cowboy country); they just never make national TV. Too bad because it's all of the excitement of thoroughbred racing without having to wait while the horses are so far from you that you can barely see them. And photo-finishes are far more common with quarter horse racing.
Now THAT'S excitement  ..
