p.2 #1 · Canon 40D stuck in Portrait mode, can't make any changes.
Again, I've taken out both batteries multiple times and I've added the firmware to the CF card, but the camera won't recognize it and do the upgrade and I can't get to the menu option to start it either.
The previous photos showing the restriced mode are slightly different that mine. Mine shows "Restricted D".
From what I've read from the hacks, they aren't permanent and are loaded each time the camera is booted.
It's still a head scratcher to me, but I keep hoping I can uncover a combination of key presses that may force the camera in to doing a full reboot.
Please keep any and all ideas coming, it's appreciated.
Just found this link to a pdf, it has info about firmware based restrictions that the Government uses, it lists D and several eos bodies including the 40D...don't know if this will help....read thru it, doesn't help

I understand that a common hack for the 40D is to allow it to shoot video mode....which would mean (if done for your camera) that a button should start recording...it is a long shot but might be worth testing for......if only to eliminate this possibility.
If it was hacked to produce videos then the portrait mode would make sense in some respects.

Format C:/ (C equals camera not your computer drive)...I don't know if it would work but if you have a USB port and your computer recognizes your camera...I don't have a 40D...

Earlier today I made a bootable CF card and added the firmware file for 1.1.1, but it didn't do anything when inserted and turned on. Still don't know how to force the update, without having access to the menu.
Some very interesting links, I'm having to use the translator function and it's slow going.
The EOS Utility does show firmware, 1.1.1, but it's grayed out and hitting the icon above it doesn't appear to do anything at all with this camera.

Gary, there is a special data security kit OSK-E3, not sure if this is the issue, but I found a note about it at the link below...still looking...Jerry
Here's a full review of the OSK-E3, it's a software and hardware package...includes what looks like a dongle, without the kit I'm guessing you can't get to the function to disable/enable or setup the security features
You're gonna have to call Canon and get a security tech to help you if this is the issue, front line support won't/can't help with this stuff normally, don't ask me why, I know nothing

Maybe it's a spy camera and compromising the FW is a matter of national security. Be on the lookout for wee men in black and Raybans should you choose to accept this mission...

If there was ever a case of the seller giving you a refund this is it.
He has cocked up the camera and you should just send it back.
I have never heard of 40D's being hacked for video, I can't imagine it does them much good. Even if you could get this sorted I wouldn't want the camera.

I remember about a software allowing any liveview-enabled Canon camera to record to a connected computer. Including 40D. No hack involved.

Just a quick update. I went into Canon's online repair site and started a ticket to get an estimate and when I put in the serial number, the camera came back at "Under Warranty".
I know I couldn't be that lucky, but I've got it in writing, so I guess I'll send it off and see what happens.

I'll keep you all posted as this saga plays out.
Thanks so much for all your input.

Sorry to be a wet blanket but you have to hope this is a camera malfunction as a warranty repair is unlikely to cover a botched hack attempt.
That aside......a 40D under warranty? Either it has been unsold in a dealer's shop for years.....or a very recent repair by Canon has gone wrong!!

I thought that too but then you can buy aftermarket warranties (Mack etc) and I'm not sure if they are actually undertaken by Canon or not, but yes, they may take one look at the botched firmware and refuse to do it free
I'd still be after a refund there are thousands of good 40D's around

The latter. The restricted mode is what Canon Repair technicians use. As I understand it, they upload special firmware, test the camera before and after repair, and then wipe it and load new firmware that is the latest revision for the model.
