I'm sure i'll get reamed for this, but there seems to be a difference to me. It really seems like the images posted on here by Canon shooters tend to be sharper than the ones posted by Nikon shooters. Is it just me? Is it the processing? What gives? I know I'm not crazy. Maybe there is something that I am missing in my post processing?

i think it's in your head. you can't really tell on web scaled images. depending on how they get processed and downsized, even somewhat fuzzy pics can look sharp on screen. I'm a canon shooter and recently shot a wedding who used nikon (d700 and d3) and i have no issues with the sharpness they provided.

It's the glass. I use Canon purely because of the glass.

Web sharpening. Completely blurry photos can be made to look sharp for the web.

Lol at its the glass. It certainly is not. It's the processing and web sharpening. That's all.

Thanks everyone for responding. Any tips or links to threads that may help with my processing and web sharpening?

Processing and web compression.

Canon / Nikon / Sony / etc. all look the same at 1000px by 666px on your browser.

For the web stuff, I agree the sharpness is in the processing; but I've used high end glass on high end cameras from both Canon and Nikon, and I assure you there was a difference to me. Canon glass was more clear, realistic, vibrant and crisp when comparing the exact same shot from both. Of course, this test of mine was 5 years ago. So, that may have changed in the past few years. They may be neck and neck today, but I was serious as to why I chose Canon. The only thing that attempts me to swap from time to time is Nikon's raw sensor color and Canon's dumbass issues. lol

If that was the case I wouldn't be asking this.

Just trying to get a better workflow for sharpening. What I am doing is definitely not as good.

After a decade of shooting Nikon and then switching to Canon before this year, I can say 100% without a doubt that Nikon files are sharper than Canon files. Everything coming out of every Canon body I've used (all with L-glass mind you) has been softer than anything I shot with Nikon. I like this for portraiture but for documentary work I'd much rather have the sharper images from Nikon.

Keep in mind I was using the best primes with each system. A lot of Nikon users use the zooms a lot which I have found to be as soft or slightly softer than Canon primes.

I'm also talking full-res here. At web levels it's all in the processing as was mentioned.

Well, maybe things have changed. That'll just add to the reasons for me to consider swapping. lol

I shoot Canon but have done a couple of editing jobs on files from various Nikon camera's; don't really see any difference to be honest.

I don't web sharpen and my images are always sharp. Having said that I don't think there is a canon/ Nikon difference...

Okay, to be more precise, assuming equal processing, brand is not a relevant factor in sharpness once an image is processed down to browser-size dimensions, resharpened, and displayed in a browser.

James' point is that if you've noticed a trend, you've misattributed it to camera brand when it's actually a product of processing. Dropping a file to browser resolution does away with so much data that any sharpness-related image-sensor differences are effectively destroyed.
