So, you are saying that in fact 85L it is 3 times better than 85 1.8 (since is three times more expensive). I own 85 1.8 for about 3 years and I borrowed 85 L from a friend for a whole week. From the tests I've runed I will never be able to say this. But of course,if you have the money and the pride to own only L lenses,it's not a bad thing.

It isn't a question of whether or not the 1.2 is 3 times better.... it is a question of, "do you need what the 85L can do?" There is no competitor for it... Sigma doesn't make one. no other company makes one, therefore, Canon can charge what they want to charge for it... and if you are someone that needs f/1.2 or desires the look that f/1.2 produces, than you have to have it. I owned the 85 1.8 for 5 or 6 years. It was a great lens, but once I tested the 1.2L and saw the difference in the look... I had to have it.

I can tell you with almost 100% certainty that all of the shots I posted in that engagement set were shot wide open.

gabimaster.
once the optic get to high level (85 1.8), it'll cost significantly more to produce a higher level than it already is (85 1.2L). a premium lens or any item will cost 3x,4x more but the result wont be 3x,4x better. Is a Ferrari 20x,30x better than a Camry?? is bugatti Veyron 3x,4x better than a ferrari??

If you're looking "best bang for $" then 85 1.8
but if you want the best: 85 1.2
to answer your question how often i shoot at below 1.8
50% - 60% time i use 85L <1.8
~10% @ 1.2.

The Zeiss C/Y 85 1.4 is a nice compromise

I have the EF 135L & 85 1.8 for af use and the Zeiss for low light and the look it has.

I've owned the 85 1.8 for about a year and upgraded to the 1.2LII recently. It really depends on the photographers view of his files. You really cannot quantitatively measure (4x-5x) cost vs IQ. Everybody's eye is a little different. The 85 1.8 is a very good lens. Is it worth the cost? very subjective answer for everyone. To me it's been absolutely worth it. The 1.2 has a signature look. Sharp wide open, creamy bokeh and has more contrast. Yes, mine is sharper at 1.8 and 2.0 then the 1.8 was.

85 f1.8 is the best value Canon lens on the market IMHO. I love this lens because is so easy to use and portraits at f2.2 and above are great. In recent times I have opportunity to shoot with 85L - it is a very different lens. AF is slower and results at f4 and above are not better than from 85 f1.8; however results at 1.2 or 1.4 can be just breath taking. This lens is just a different game - it allows me to shoot in very low light and I can take shots at theater where previously my success rate was much lower also in some churches where no flash is allowed this lens is a savior.

Although I own some L primes (and all L zooms), I continue to love my 85mm f/1.8 and would not change it out for the 85mm L. The f/1.8 is one of the true gems in the Canon line-up and provides perhaps the best bang per buck of almost any Canon lens. Yes, it cannot shoot at f/1.4 or f/1.2, but with a slightly long lens the f/1.8 aperture provides very narrow DOF. It focuses fast and accurately. The image quality is excellent. The small size and weight are great benefits in a number of situations - such as when I carry a bunch of other much larger lenses in the bag or when shooting subjects like street.

I believe the 85l is a great lens and worth the price of admission. However, only test that matters is your own. Get your hands on one and give it a go. Many are happy w 135, also an excellent lens others enjoy 85 sigma and C 1.8. Experiment and make the decision that is best for you and your clients.

I keep hearing how versital the 70-200 is, but do we need versital at engagement shoots? I certainly don't need versital for portriate shoots and much prefer the 85L for its uniqueness. You can use a 70-200 and have your stuff look like everyone elses (and that might not be a bad thing) or you can use a lens like the 85L and have your work set apart from all those versital shooters. Now for some stuff the 70-200 is probably a must, but I don't think that is the case for engagement shoots.

I have both the 135L and 85L and don't plan on getting rid of either. Use them both a lot. The 135L is just about a perfect lens - smile everytime I see the images it produces. The 85L is slow, heavy, and expensive. But the images can be magical!

Really depends on the perspective you want in the photo. Both lenses are superb. But I'd think that the 85mm focal length (especially if using a non-full-frame body) would be more useful for most shots in that line of work.

I shoot engagements and weddings too, and i only have the 35L and the 135L, cant afford a 85L yet and one day will get one, but for the timebeing. These two primes on two 5DIII bodies are great. Could not be happier, i get the shots i need and if i need to frame differently i just use my feet.

Get the Sigma 85 f/1.4, it's superb.

Get a 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom and your problem is solved.

I'm an engagement photog with a 35L and 135L. The combo is ok, but I find the 135 a little long for full body shots.

I know that the 85 1.8 is cheap, but I'd like to stick with L glass, if for nothing else than the fact that I have several 72mm filters.

Anyone switch from the 135 to an 85L? Thoughts? Recommendations?

@lars. Great photos as usual. I'd love to be on one of your outings with a note pad.

@pixel. I looked at one of the sigma 85 1.4. I read some reviews saying that it is prone to af failure due to the design of the lens. I backed away. I wanted more than 1.8 but not at the increased chance of mechanical problems. You know my luck, if there's a lemon, ill find it.

In general, I think the 85 1.8 is 80-95% of the lens that the 85 1.2 is, at 1/6 the price.
Or rather in general i think that the 85 1.2 is not worth 6x more than the 1.8

No matter how you slice it, the 85 1.8 is a great lens and even more so when you add the money aspect.

@the original poster
I wish I could help you with you dilemma. I shoot 1divs and 5d3. I haven't tried my 135 on my 5d3 yet. On my 1div it ends up being some stupid focal length that is always too long for where in at. I have a love hate relationship with the 135.

It's razor sharp, beautifubokeh, fast focusing and a great lens. Just me+f/2+telephoto, my technique isn't up to snuff on it lately.
