Just picked up a 70-200 VRII yesterday and went to test it out at a girls volleyball game. This is only the second game I have shot this year and I am a bit rusty in anticipating the action shots. I brought my 400 along just in case and used it for a few shots but quickly went back to the 70-200.
The 70-200 is a great lens and when paired with the D3s what more could a guy want?
A side note to say how impressed I am with the D3s. It is an amazing body!
Grant,
These are amazingly clean images. I could never get this kind of result with my 7D. I just may have to jump ship one of these days. I like numbers 1, 2 and 5. Love the intensity in number 5.

thanks bob and everyone.
amazing how clean a picture the D3s produces. and at ISO 8000.
i loved canon for 10 years but have no regrets moving to nikon. you really can't go wrong with either company.
I was going to start a thread and post some recent volleyball and talk about how difficult it is to shoot. However, after seeing your shots, I don't dare show mine!

Very nice work!
thanks dennis.
i think i got some lucky shots this time around. i have shot volleyball a couple times in the past few years and when i got home I didn't have many good shots. i find it a hard sport to shoot.

Post them! Best place in the world to learn, critiques can be a bit harsh, but they are honest and helpful. They will also help others, thereby producing more images for the girls and their parents...
I was wondering what settings you are using I have a D3S also and 70-200 Vr2 and 300 f2.8. I have struggled with Focus IQ and cycling lights (I think, it was the lights). Shooting thru the net is next to impossible without prefocusing. I have used single point-Continus focus and AF area(9 and 21). I have used strobes and pretty good results but not with ambient. I shot a college game at 1/1200 f2.8 ISO 4000 to 5000 but still not really happy. Thanks for any info that I might be able to try with my D3S.
