p.1 #1 · High School Football - Advice Please

I have an opportunity to get on the sidelines of my alma mater for a football game this weekend, and wanted to ask about gear combinations. I have the following at my disposal:

1DmkIII
5D2
500 f/4
100-400
70-200 2.8

I was thinking of putting the 500 on the MkIII
and either the 70-200 or 100-400 on the 5D.

Any thoughts on this?

I would have the 100-400 prob on the 5d2 and the 70-200 on 1d3. I don't think I would bother with the 500 for the game, you'll be much more able to move around to get different views.

If at night, forget the 5D2 and forget the 100-400.

I don't see any mention of flash. And since you say HS, I'm assuming this isn't at a NCAA stadium with ESPN HD ambient light levels.

500 on the 1D3 might be ok for the first quarter at high ISO. "At your disposal"... is this your gear or borrowed? Are you used to shooting with long primes? If not, you might get frustrated at trying to follow the action through a soda straw.

Worst case, plan on 1D3 with 70-200, high ISO. Wait for the action to get close. Keep SS at 1/800 or better, do a little NR in PP. Best case, good overcast daylight... 1D3 with 500/4. 5D2 will be worth bringing with any of the other lenses if you'll have enough light to stay below ISO 1600 while maintaining SS of 1/800 or better.

OK, if afternoon and since your site has BIF, you should definitely use the 500 on 1D3 and bring the 5D2 for 2nd body. Center point for servo is best if the action is moving faster than a walk.

+1 1dIII w/500 5D2 with 70-200. Leave the 100-400 at home. With glass that long I prefer to shoot from the end zones as much as possible to get plays opening up and linemen locked up.

You might also consider switching bodies when the play gets closer to take advantage of the 1D's AF and FPS, etc. during closer action.
