My brother has recently become involved with photography. He bought a Canon T1 and has one 85mm f1/8 lens.
Because he has mentioned several times that he wishes he had a wide angle lens + he has an approaching bd I thought a new lens would be a great gift.

Because I've used zeiss lenses for some time I'm not up to date on Canon lenses. He travels a lot on business to some great places so wide angle might be a good idea.

Could use some suggestions.
thanks.

I suggest your brother establish an FM membership and then he can ask and respond directly without a relay.

Nonsense, is it anything to do with "GIFT"?

A choice of focal length is very personal, I'd say, so even though it's a gift, unless you really intend it as a surprise, it might make sense to ask your brother discreetly if he has an idea what he's looking for. That said, for a T1 with its "cropped" sensor, I would dream of a 17-55/2.8 IS, but that is a bit over your 1G limit. Since I don't shoot with a 1.6 cropper, I don't have other suggestions at hand.

Sorry, I did not see the word "gift".

In that case, we need to know your budget.

Canon 10-22 is a nice ultra wide angle lens on Canon crop bodies.

If he wants ultra-wide angle something like a Canon 10-22 or Tokina 12-24 are worth looking into. Or if is happy enough with just wide, I'd recommend something like a Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS or the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (with or without VC).

The 17-40 is a good entry L lens and it covers a pretty wide range.

If you are looking at spending up to $1,000 then you can get a Sigma 10-20 or the Tokina 12-24 and the Tamron 17-50 or 28-75 if you don't want any overlap.
That budget can put you into a couple of good third party lenses.
The Canon equivalents to that is not obtainable at that price.
I shoot the Tokina and the 17-50 on a 7D and am quite pleased with the results.

Stick with canon: 10-22 or 17-55. Nice guy to spend a grand on your brother!

It would help greatly if we knew what subjects your brother likes to shoot, indoor, outdoor, etc.

Your brother is use to some pretty fast, low light capable glass, most zooms under a grand are not fast with the exception of the 17-55 f2.8 IS.

The 17-55 2.8 is fast and sharp, it's like a 28-88mm on a full frame camera, new with a hood (which is highly recommended) and a UV filter for protection, your cost is around $1200. You might look in the Buy&Sell forum for a used one, I've purchased several used items from FMers and everything has been in great condition!

If you want to stick with fast primes, for less than $1K, you could get an EF 28 f1.8 and a 50 f1.4. All are USM lenses and like his 85mm could be used on a full frame camera if he gets serious latter on; EF-S lenses like the 17-55 can not be used of FF digital or 35mm film bodies.

Other options:

The 10-22 is sharp as a tack and it's distortion is minimal, it's a killer lens, it's like a 16-35 on a full frame body, but it can't be used on a full body like his 85 1.8 can and it's not a fast, low light lens. I have the 10-22 and love mine, but as of late have been using a 17-40L and it's colors, contrast and sharpness seem better, it's an f4 lens and is not fast either.

If fast, low light, isn't an issue tho, you might also look at the EF-S 15-85 IS. It covers a large focal range, like 24-136mm on a full frame body, is a really nice single wide-to-short telephoto option it has IS and is sharp like the 17-55; it's about $900 with hood/UV filter.

Wish I had a bro that wanted to spend a grand on me, with only an 85 to shoot with, I'd love either the 17-55 or 15-85 for a zoom solution; both have IS, something I'm seriously hooked on

Hope the above ramblings help...
Jerry

"wide" compared to the 85mm on a crop is a pretty broad range. Before committing to a ultra wide angle lens (Canon 10-22mm), He's probably (assuming here) looking for something in a more normal range. 85mm looks like 135mm on a crop camera and is quickly approaching the end of the typical portrait range and into the telephoto range.

The Canon 17-55mm is an excellent lens, but expensive. The Tamron 17-50mm (non VC) is an excellent lens too as is the Sigma 17-50mm VC.

There are a lot of excellent 3rd party lenses in that range. If he really does want UWA, I'd go with the Canon 10-22 first and the Sigma 10-20 second.

15 is much wider than 18. Id say 15-85. If he wants uwa, 11-16 tokina or 10-22. If you get uwa might fill in with 18-55 is.

Buy him a 17-55/2.8 and include a gift receipt so he can exchange it if he doesn't like it. To someone who only has a portrait telephoto, 'wide' probably doesn't mean ultrawide.

thanks everyone for the good ideas. I agree with several who have suggested the 17-55/2.8 and will go with that.
Appreciate all your suggestions.
